On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, after a traumatic childhood, Leslie Reyes learned to ride a motorcycle and wrote about her experiences in her memoir, The Zen Of Learning To Ride A Motorcycle.
Yoga instructor, motorcycle enthusiast, and psychiatric and chemical dependency nurse Leslie Reyes, BSN, RN has firsthand experience with mental illness as the daughter of a schizophrenic mother and then through her own personal struggles with mental health.
Her mother’s schizophrenia left her with scars from her childhood. However, Leslie Reyes still had fuel in her tank.
Leslie said that she felt like she was being held captive by trauma. She saved her mother’s life at the tender age of 10 years old, and eventually came to the conclusion that her parents had failed to teach her the survival skills she needed because of her mother’s mental health issues.
Reyes made the decision to learn how to ride a motorcycle when she was 50 years old. Her years of living with stifling emotional pain gave way to the idea that broken things can always be fixed, and she was amazed by how many liberating life lessons could be learned on the road.
Reyes exposes her highest and lowest points along the long road of humanity in her honest and moving memoir, The Zen Of Learning To Ride A Motorcycle. She also offers a helping hand as she navigates the ups and downs of an unpredictable life by applying the knowledge she acquired while learning to ride a motorcycle to her ongoing struggle with fear.
“I never thought a motorcycle would become the guru I needed in order to change my life habits, and learn to trust myself,” said Leslie Reyes.
The Zen of Learning to Ride a Motorcycle tells Reyes’ empowering, revved-up story of overcoming her fears and learning to be “present” in her approach to everything in life with humor to balance the sometimes heavy subject matter.
“When I’m riding my motorcycle, I’m riding my motorcycle,” wrote Leslie Reyes. “Practicing mindfulness, and responding instead of reacting, leads to peace of mind.”
