Labile Records is proud to announce the new album “The Old Way” from Colorado-based musician Drew Geiger aka E J R M. “The Old Way” tells a story through sound and textures of a spirit walk to gain higher understanding and guidance. The five tracks are different checkpoints starting with walking on Sacred Earth and finding yourself entranced by a mesmerizing Dreamcatcher. A foggy Path of Ruins is the road that continues and is so thick you cannot see your own feet. At the end of the path, you then reach the Elder, whom you find encompasses all that is wisdom. The Elder reaches out and puts their hand on your chest. You begin to float while your Soul Turns to Light.

Sacred Earth is a track that I recorded on a baby grand piano in the middle of a hospital. I then tampered with the track and sent several layers to create a deep cathedral sound through my ambient rig. Something I enjoy doing in lots of my music is manipulating recordings, if it may be of nature or music, to create textures so that every listener can have their own opinion on what sonic journey it will take them on.
Dreamcatcher is a weird one – This song has a dark and ominous feel from me using octave layers of manipulated acoustic guitar with people talking in the background of the recording. The vocals you hear are of an old recording of me singing “how do you carry on” and then singing something else after that I can’t remember, ha, but the beauty of experimental ambiance is you don’t need to know how you did some thing. It’s just the fact that you got them from a strange technique you never tried before and that is a lot of fun in my opinion.
Path of Ruins is a shorter track; this was a recycled song I could never figure out what to do with until I started forming this Album. The drone I created had a baritone priest singing in a cathedral sound to me, so I couldn’t help but add it to the mix. I genuinely have no idea how I created it cause it was so long ago, but I’m sure it was a lot of sound manipulation as well.
Elder is my fave and is single for a reason. It is a song that I wanted to constantly grow and grow with multiple layers bending, dipping, and waving on top of each other. Elder was an experiment for me to create different layers that could sound like they are interacting and attempting to sweep the listener into a trance-like state.
Soul Turns to Light is the final installment of the Album, and I chose to add the song a bit more last minute. I love indie video games, and this was me inspired by some influences from composers who made soundtracks for “Journey,” “Abzu,” and “Sky: Children of Light,” to name a few. This song had a soft, hopeful, and upbeat sound, which I thought was perfect for ending the Album.
