Following on from the success of 2020’s ‘The People’s City’, the instalment ‘A Woman’s Work’ curated by British Culture Archive will see a collection of photographs, displayed on the exhibition wall of The Refuge, to celebrate acclaimed female photographers in the North showcased together for the first time.

Founded in 2017, British Culture Archive is a renowned non-profit organisation set up to detail, highlight and preserve the changes in British culture and society through documentary photography.

The exhibition will feature the work of Tyneside photographer Tish Murtha – who was one of the most pre-eminent British documentary photographers of the post-war era. Tish was known for capturing social change and everyday life on the fringes of society; And Anne Worthington who had produced an incredible body of work that documented the inner city communities of East Manchester in the early 2000s.

The photographs show the inner city communities of Beswick, Clayton and Openshaw – areas of East Manchester that had fallen into decline. They capture the last days of these industrial areas, before and during the demolition that made way for new housing and businesses. Anne focused on the daily lives of people who lived there, and how they worked to keep their community together when so many institutions had fallen away.

About Kimpton Clocktower Hotel

Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is a magnificent, terracotta Grade II listed building with a history dating back to 1890, when it first opened as The Refuge Assurance Company headquarters. The grand clock tower at the centre of its striking Victorian architecture is an unmistakable landmark on Manchester’s skyline. All 270 loft-style bedrooms, including 11 suites, were designed to make the most of the stunning, double and triple-height ceilings.

Other original, period features including glazed bricks, tiles and faience, stained glass and carved wooden staircases, meet contemporary fittings and interiors, including a three-metre-tall bronze horse by artist Sophie Dickens which sits in the lobby. The piece denotes a horse-and-carriage ‘turning circle’ that once stood on the spot.

About The Refuge by Volta

The Refuge is a public bar and dining room set in 10,000 square foot of breath-taking space at Kimpton Clocktower. It’s about a simple devotion to great food and drink, and an extraordinary transformation of one of the city’s grandest spaces – all designed for the people of Manchester. The curators of the space are the masterminds behind the multi-award-winning Volta in West Didsbury – the DJs turned award-winning restaurateurs, Luke Cowdrey and Justin Crawford of “Unabombers” fame.

The Refuge is located in one of Manchester’s most iconic buildings – the former offices of the Refuge Assurance on Oxford Street, which was constructed in stages between 1891 and 1932. The building has been subject to a painstaking renovation, restoring a feast of original details in glorious terracotta, faience, marble and glazed brick. Modern design has been woven carefully into the space by Luke and Justin who are masters at creating the perfect atmosphere for enjoying their very special food and drink. The result in an exceptional all day dining and drinking space for eating, meeting, relaxing, working, toasting… and perhaps a bit of dancing.
