Bond of Brothers Our Stories, Our Legacies by Bob and Nick Finamore

In their heartfelt memoir Bond of Brothers: Our Stories, Our Legacies, brothers Bob and Nick Finamore invite readers into the vibrant tapestry of their lives, beginning in post-war New Jersey and stretching across decades of personal triumphs, shared adventures, and an unshakable fraternal connection. This sequel to their earlier work, Two Jersey Brothers: Stories from Our Haledon Boyhood 1939-1953, shifts the focus from their childhood in the small, tight-knit town of Haledon to the dynamic paths they forged as adults, all while illuminating the ties that kept them close despite their differences.

The story opens at Paterson Central High School, where Bob and Nick spent their formative years. From there, their journeys diverge in fascinating ways. Nick, a man of eclectic passions, pursued a life filled with adventure and creativity. He became a licensed pilot and co-owner of a Piper Arrow airplane, soaring through the skies with the same enthusiasm he brought to his other pursuits: playing piano in front of audiences, sailing the waters of Cape Cod, and connecting with others as a licensed ham radio operator. Bob, meanwhile, channeled his energy into athletics and service. A standout football player, he earned a spot at Memphis State University before signing with the New York Jets. His athletic career was followed by two years of service in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict, a chapter that shaped his resilience and perspective.

Yet, for all their individual achievements, Bond of Brothers shines brightest in its portrayal of the moments that bound Bob and Nick together. The brothers recount vivid memories that range from the exhilarating—working together to save dolphins at the Jersey Shore—to the deeply tender, such as comforting their 102-year-old mother in her final moments. These stories, woven with warmth and authenticity, reveal the secrets to their enduring connection: mutual respect, shared values, and an unwavering commitment to family.

This sequel builds on the foundation laid in Two Jersey Brothers, which chronicled Bob and Nick’s early years in Haledon, a one-square-mile town nestled near Paterson, New Jersey’s “Silk City.” Their first book painted a nostalgic picture of life during the Depression and World War II, shaped by their Italian heritage—grandparents who emigrated from Fraine and Caserta—and the lessons learned at their family’s Belmont Diner. There, amid the clatter of plates and the chatter of colorful customers, they absorbed values of discipline, hard work, and community that would guide them into adulthood.

In Bond of Brothers, the Finamore brothers expand this narrative, offering a dual perspective on lives well lived. Bob’s chapters reflect his journey from the football field to the classroom, where he later taught, while Nick’s recount his careers in music and at AT&T, alongside his adventurous hobbies. Their “brother-to-brother storytelling,” as they describe it, pulls readers into the highs and lows of their experiences—training with the Jets, navigating the skies, and standing side by side at their mother’s bedside. Through it all, they uncover the “one core meaning” that anchors their lives: the strength of their bond.

More than a memoir, Bond of Brothers: Our Stories, Our Legacies is a celebration of family, resilience, and the unique ways siblings can grow apart yet remain inseparable. Bob and Nick Finamore have crafted a narrative that resonates with anyone who cherishes the ties that endure through time, distance, and life’s many twists. From the Jersey Shore to the skies above, their story is a testament to the power of brotherhood—and a legacy worth sharing.

Bob and Nick Finamore

Nick Finamore built an impressive 35-year career at AT&T, rising to the role of Regional Vice President while navigating the evolving fields of engineering, computer systems, sales, and human resources. His expertise and leadership didn’t end with retirement; AT&T tapped him for an additional 12 years as a loaned executive, during which he worked under three New Jersey governors to streamline and enhance state operations. Now settled in Annandale, New Jersey, Nick enjoys a rich family life with Marie, his wife of 60 years. Together, they cherish their three children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandson, a testament to a legacy that extends beyond his professional achievements into a deeply rooted family bond.

Bob Finamore dedicated 35 years to education, leaving a lasting mark as a teacher, coach, driving instructor, and disciplinarian/athletic director, roles that showcased his versatility and commitment to shaping young lives. His athletic prowess and contributions earned him induction into the Hall of Fame at his high school, college, and the Paterson Old Timers athletic association, reflecting a lifetime of excellence both on and off the field. After the passing of his wife, Shirley, with whom he shared 44 years of marriage, Bob now resides in Wayne, New Jersey. There, he remains close to his son and daughter-in-law, his daughter, and two grandchildren, finding joy and connection in the family he holds dear while honoring a career that touched countless lives.
