On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, in Bill Riley’s The Unlikely Crofter, disillusioned solicitor Peter Somerville journeys from Surrey to the wilds of Scotland, where his past catches up with him and his life is transformed forever.

The Unlikely Crofter

After years of writing professionally on topics such as wine, The Unlikely Crofter is retiree Bill Riley’s first published novel.

The Unlikely Crofter follows Peter Somerville, an unhappy, unfulfilled man with a well-kept secret. Outwardly a respectable, middle-aged solicitor in a quiet Surrey town, secretly Peter dreams of a different life far away from suburbia but also away from his darker, not so respectable, past. When a sinister visitor arrives, Peter’s dreams are turned into reality, and his life changes forever.

Showcasing how those good story lines are worth holding onto and developing, The Unlikely Crofter will have readers gripped as its protagonist morphs from pillar of suburban society to having his dark secrets laid bare and his life changed beyond recognition.

This intriguing, well-constructed novel delivers twists and turns that are almost impossible to anticipate. For more than ten years the storyline behind this contemporary novel had been percolating with the author after first being conceived as an exercise with a writing group.  Well worth the read, this debut novel from Bill Riley also highlights that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.

Bill Riley

Bill Riley spent most of his life in the wine trade in various capacities.  He now spends his time between Lancashire and Spain where he writes on wine and many other subjects for an English language magazine (although he says his Spanish is still pretty damn average).
