I interviewed lifestyle blogger and podcaster Jenny Melrose about her career, what inspires her, and her podcast for business influencers, Influencer Entrepreneurs.
Jenny is a former reading specialist who “retired” from her teaching career when her blogging income far exceeded her salary. Through hard work and dedication, her lifestyle blog, The Melrose Family, became regularly sought out by nationally recognized brands such as Neutrogena, Smuckers, Glad, Costco, Stanley Steamer, Sara Lee, and many more. She is a content strategist that helps entrepreneurs better understand their messaging and unique position in the online space. Now, she’s combining her passion for teaching with her extensive experience of creating strategic content for online business owners via JennyMelrose.com and her podcast, Influencer Entrepreneurs with Jenny Melrose as well as her first book Influencer Entrepreneurs: The 4-Step Framework to Building Your Audience, Growing Your Business, and Making More Money Online.
I started podcasting almost 5 years ago because of my background in teaching. I enjoyed writing, but found that when I spoke my audience was easily able to put my strategies into practice. I routinely gave examples that opened my listeners to words that they had heard or read before, but because it was given with how to apply a principle it changed their understanding of it. I wanted to reach more women that were struggling to make their business successful and podcasting provided that opportunity.
Influencer Entrepreneurs with Jenny Melrose. I believe that every business owner can be an influencer for their business and that every influencer should treat their business like business. An Influencer Entrepreneur looks to see how they can organically use social media and their blog to help solve a problem for their audience that they can monetize and build a business from.
My podcast is on all major podcasting platforms (itunes, stitcher, spotify, etc)
My podcast teaches female business owners how to organically use social media and a blog to grow their business by attracting new customers and clients.
Solo host, but I invite guests to come on to share their expertise.
I have a team that edits the audio and written format of the podcast.
I write outlines and do keyword research prior to an episode to make sure I am using the terms that my ideal audience is looking for.
I believe in consistency and in a little over 4.5 years I have not missed a single weekly episode which means that I have had a ton of practice interviewing and speaking so it has gotten stronger over time.
During the pandemic it was difficult to create podcast episodes at home since my two young daughters were also home. In order to stay ahead of my content, I created a podcasting day where we came to the understanding that I needed 3 hours in order to batch record multiple episodes.
I love listening to other marketers to see what they are finding is working for them as well as to find great guests for my show.
My podcast episodes are turned into blog posts on JennyMelrose.com. I also promote them on Instagram by turning them into carousel photos that give information from the episode in them.
I gain clients from my podcasts because many of my listeners feel a connection with me because I’m in their ear on a weekly basis.
The biggest moment for me was when I a conference in person prior to Covid and I asked a question while being in the audience. When the speaker was done I got up to go to the next lecture and I had a group of women stop me. They said they had no idea what I looked like but they knew it was me the moment I asked my question because of my voice.
Create a system so that you don’t get overwhelmed and be as consistent as possible. Like anything, it takes time to build.
I absolutely love my podcast and my listeners. It is one of the most fulfilling projects that I do within my business.
