On The Table Read Magazine, “the best entertainment magazine in the UK“, Australian folk-drenched indie pop sister duo Charm of Finches released their new album, Marlinchen In The Snow, via Aus IndieSpunk Records.
Prepare to be bewitched by Charm of Finches. This Australian sister duo weaves intricate folk-pop tapestries, both graceful and darkly alluring. Their seamless blood harmonies navigate themes of melancholy and wonder, leaving listeners both introspective and captivated.
Charm of Finches’ talent has garnered them a loyal following and industry recognition. Their music graces coveted Spotify playlists like Lush + Ethereal, Infinite Acoustic, noir, and Fresh Folk. This acclaim culminated in their 2022 win for Best Album at the Australian Folk Music Awards.
Mabel and Ivy Windred-Wornes, the creative minds behind Charm of Finches, released their critically acclaimed third album, “Wonderful Oblivion,” in 2021 through New York’s AntiFragile Music. Their captivating live performances have taken them across the UK, Europe, and Canada, leaving audiences enthralled.
A force to be reckoned with in the folk-pop scene, Charm of Finches boasts not only critical acclaim but also prestigious awards like the Australian Folk Music Awards’ Best Folk Album and Music Victoria’s Best Contemporary Folk Act. Their music has even garnered two nominations for the highly respected Australian Music Prize.
Seeking inspiration for their fourth studio album, “Marlinchen In The Snow,” the Charm of Finches sisters embarked on a month-long recording journey to rural Nova Scotia in February 2023.
Acclaimed Canadian producer Daniel Ledwell (Jenn Grant, Oh Pep!) joined them in the studio, and the beauty of the frozen landscape, along with the transient life they led on the road, deeply influenced their creative process. The album also draws inspiration from the dark themes of the Grimm’s fairy tale “The Juniper Tree.”
It’s a haunting tale of how Marlinchen discovers the death of her stepbrother at the hands of her mother. This found its way into one of our songs. There’s lots of symbolism in the story but really, it’s about female strength and intuition – overcoming obstacles led by your inner voice – a theme throughout the album.
