On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, Making Sacrifices by B.C. Harris blends gritty realism and the supernatural when Isaac Saddler’s fictional world is linked with a real-life murder investigation.
Building on B.C Harris’ rare talent for blending multiple genres to create mystical thrillers that intrigue readers and keep them guessing until the final pages, her second novel, Making Sacrifices, follows a mysterious cold case upending the life of a shy author and historian.
The body of a woman is discovered in a bog pool just five miles from where Isaac Saddler grew up, and naturally he’s curious about the case. But this curiosity turns to abject horror when the police release a facial reconstruction of the victim, and she looks exactly like Vida, the main character and pop culture icon from his most famous graphic novel.
While to the world she is Vida, to Isaac Saddler she epitomises only fear, the stuff of his nightmares, willed into existence through art and writing. Transformed from victim to warrior, she became Vida, Queen of the Vidian Empire, but now Vida doesn’t just exist between the pages of a book.
High on Exmoor archaeologists think they’ve found ancient remains, but the body proves to be evidence of a modern murder. A facial reconstruction publicised by the police quickly goes viral. Now Isaac must find out why the woman of his nightmares ended up in a bog pool close to his childhood home.
While Vida used to exist solely in Saddler’s nightmares, she has now been released into the world – in more ways than one. As tensions ratchet high and the dark landscape begins to reflect the intensity of the tale, it becomes shockingly clear how far one man has gone to protect the ones he loves…
As an author, you often wonder – how unsettling would it be to come face to face with one of your creations?
This isn’t simply a story of solving a murder. It’s about the sacrifices that people make, often hidden from the world and from society, in the name of love and family. The ghosts of our pasts, the choices we’ve made, our hidden fears and suppressed desires – all of those things have a way of coming to the surface. I wanted this novel to serve as a mirror – it reflects all of those dark, uncomfortable corners of our psyches back at us.
