On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, Thomas Lane has released a white knuckle thriller about the boundaries of human consciousness, The Karma Factor.
In The Karma Factor, a work of visionary fiction that explores the boundaries of human consciousness against the backdrop of a classic suspense thriller written by Thomas Lane, a blue collar cop is forced to straddle alternative realities and must evolve beyond his badge and overcome his own dark past. Lane expertly weaves the novel’s larger message into a ground-breaking, white-knuckle ride between worlds with a purpose that transcends genre. Characters set out to make karmic amends, right wrongs, and reestablish the power of choice.
NYPD detective James Early decides to end his life because he is haunted by a nameless guilt and is tired of running from his demons. He makes himself an easy target by tricking a suspect who is armed into blind rage. However, it is unclear why the bullets fired at point-blank range are diverted. There are no wounds or blood. Early miraculously begins a long and laborious search for meaning and the solution to the mystery of the missing bullets rather than the conclusion: “If I’ve been given some kind of reprieve … what in God’s name am I supposed to do with it?”
As it travels through the ages, intertwining past lives with present ones, on a hero’s quest for redemption, The Karma Factor flips the theme of good versus evil on its head. Lane juxtaposes a visionary monk confined to an abandoned monastery in the Tibetan Himalayas with veteran city detectives and an elusive serial killer.
When the main character Early sets out to find the mysterious force that saved his life, he finds out that he was a part of a covert mission in a previous life. A group of highly educated thinkers, led by a Tibetan sage, had gained access to the Akashic Records, a collection of every soul’s thoughts, deeds, and actions throughout time. What is their objective? To use these records to discover important people’s past unresolved karma and assist those souls in taking responsibility for their actions. In a world surrounded by denial and fear, the mission’s greatest challenge would be to restore an awareness of possibilities unburdened by the past.
“I see the world as a place of grit and suffering and magic,” said Thomas Lane. “I wanted to capture those contrasting elements, show them as parts of a whole when viewed through a lens that is vast and kind and timeless. Although the story revolves around a cop and a serial killer, the book is fundamentally about hope –– a hope that understands both bullets and prayers, and the path that goes beyond.”
Thomas Lane is a multifaceted artist who was raised in Connecticut and is drawn to places where art, spirit, and social justice meet.
