Catherine The Great

While many don’t know the full story of how Catherine The Great turned Russian history on its head, Lady Elena Sommers has taken all the details of her life to craft a page turner of a novel, in which every aspect of Catherine’s rise to power is shared in vivid and wonderful detail.

Brought up in St Petersburg (the capital of the Russian Empire in Catherine’s time and where the Empress spent much of her time), Lady Elena uses her knowledge of the city and all things Russian to add an extra pazazz to the novel, which already bursts with her enthusiasm for her subject, and the high drama that followed her through life.

The future Russian, Empress Catherine The Great was born and raised as Sophia in a small German town called Stettin. Her mother, Johanna, wishes to marry the bright, confident and determined Sophia well, so writes a letter to Empress Elizabeth of Russia to consider her daughter to be a bride for her nephew, Ulrich Peter. The Empress invites mother and daughter to Russia, providing money, transport and security, and when she arrives in Russia, Sophia gets christened as Catherine and marries Peter.

But not everything goes to plan. Her relationship with Peter is precarious and when he becomes the Czar, Peter III, he threatens to send Catherine to a monastery or lunatic asylum. In retaliation, Catherine overthrows him with a military coup and commands him to write an abdication and following it, his execution.

The overthrow is successful, Catherine becomes an Empress in her own right and has a fabulous coronation. Her dream is to extend Russia, make it military powerful and to find her true love.

Catherine The Great is a unique work of historical fiction presenting readers with an opportunity for an adult reader to dive into the world of love, sex, murder, intrigues and treachery of Russian court in 18th-century.

Catherine the Great is a strong female character. I have always been fascinated with her achievements and how a 15-year-old Prussian princess moved to Russia, got married, organised a military coup and managed to secure the crown of Russia with unlimited power. I wrote the book about her, highlighting female power.
