On The Table Read, “the best book magazine in the UK“, YA author Greg Hulme releases first book in new dystopian teen thriller series, Magnus Powell And The Shadow Squad.

Magnus Powell And The Shadow Squad

Set in a post apocalypse future, Greg Hulme introduces teenage Magnus.  Imprisoned the whole of his life, the mysterious Shadow Squad break Magnus out of jail in order that  he can help them topple the corrupt government of the day. Unaware of his supernatural powers until now, Magnus’s priority is keeping them in check so he can do the job in hand.

Magnus Powell And The Shadow Squad

Intended for a young teen audience, Magnus Powell and The Shadow Squad is becoming quite a hit with parents who having heard their kids raving about Magnus and his superpowers have been keen to learn more.

Debut Dystopian Novel

Using the feelings of isolation felt during Covid as inspiration for his standout dystopian tale, this novel starts as it means to go on – fast paced, intriguing and a plot that despite its dystopian and futuristic setting, comes across as totally plausible.

No stranger to creative success, Greg Hulme is an accomplished piano player, and has written music for a number of film and theatre productions as well composing the music for five Carlsberg adverts. This first foray into novel writing has already garnered reviews that more experienced authors would relish. And with the dystopian sci-fi theme most definitely agreeing with the author, readers (young and older) will be delighted to learn that Magnus Powell was conceived as a trilogy, and that Hulme is already busy penning a second instalment.

Magnus Powell

Locked away in prison for fifteen years, Magnus Powell longs for the day someone will rescue him from the monotony of his incarceration. That day comes when a mysterious group of mercenaries known as the Shadow Squad break into the prison and request he joins them in their revolutionary quest to overthrow the corrupt government that has abandoned its suffering citizens.

Perfect for young teens!

Greg Hulme

“The book is the first in a trilogy recounting the adventures of Magnus Powell and is aimed at ages 10 and up as it deals with some difficult topics such as death, grief, anxiety and isolation. It’s a fun action adventure with some colourful characters and exciting set pieces.”

Greg Hulme is a first-time author, piano player and music composer from Cheshire, England. Over the past five years he has composed and produced music for five Carlsberg adverts, several short films, theatre events and has released two classical piano albums ‘Dream Big’ and ‘Seize the Day’.

When lockdown hit in 2020 he decided to embark on a new creative journey into book writing using the effects of isolation as inspiration for the story he wanted to tell. His first book ‘Magnus Powell and the Shadow Squad’ was released in December 2021 and is the first in a trilogy of books aimed at teenagers and young adults. Greg is currently hard at work writing the second and third books in the Magnus Powell anthology which he intends to release in the next three years.
