In Buckets Of Porridge, Peter Jennings Goes From The East End To Farm Life, On The Table Read Magazine, “the best entertainment eBook magazine UK“, Peter Jennings’ memoir, “Buckets of Porridge,” chronicles his journey from an East End boy to a successful farm manager and consultant, highlighting the challenges and hard work involved in the agricultural industry.
Born and raised in London’s East End, just after the Second World War, Peter Jennings’s path to becoming a successful farmer was anything but conventional. With no connection to the land, his determination and resilience propelled him into a life of agriculture.
In Buckets of Porridge, Jennings candidly shares his journey, dispelling romantic notions of farming often portrayed in television programs. His memoir offers a glimpse into the realities of the industry—the tough decisions, sleepless nights, and financial acumen required to thrive.
From farmhand to agricultural college student and ultimately, a farming consultant, Jennings’s story is one of perseverance and a commitment to sustainable farming practices. His belief that tenants should strive to leave farms in better condition than they found them has guided his career.
As a teenager seeking to embark on this unconventional path, Jennings received a piece of advice that would prove invaluable: “What you need is ‘buckets of porridge’.” While initially puzzling, he soon realized that perseverance and hard work would be essential ingredients for his success.
The book is my journey from the East-end of London, leaving home aged 17 to learn farming. Covering 50 years from ‘Horses to Satnavs’ it lives out what really happens on farms as told by the characters accepting me into their environment.
As I was not a farmer’s son, I had to gain experience and skills on diverse types of farms in order to enter Agricultural College. I moved from arable farms to dairy and pigs, eventually sheep. This moving around introduced me to various characters and situations to life, all accompanied with hard graft and humour.
