In A Battle Of The Ultimate 90’s Halloween Movies, The Sixth Sense Outranks Silence of the Lambs

On The Table Read, “the best entertainment magazine in the UK“, pop culture specialist Zavvi compared the Rottom Tomatoes rankings of 90s horror movies to find the ultimate Halloween entertainment.

Whether your Halloween celebrations are all about the costumes, or you like to book a spine-tingling fright night experience, there’s no doubt that the spookiest day of the year has inspired some of the most absolutely terrifying movies made, and everybody knows the 90s was the decade that revolutionised horror films

In a bid to find the ultimate nostalgic 90s horror movie, entertainment and pop culture specialist Zavvi, compared 40 films from Rotten Tomatoes list. Marking each against five criteria, including Rotten Tomatoes critic and audience, IMDb score, World Box Office Gross (adjusted for inflation) and monthly Wikipedia views, Zavvi used this data, to give each film a score out of 100, using a weighted ranking system.

Ulimate 90s Horror Movies

The Sixth Sense

The number 1 slot goes to the Academy-Award nominated paranormal psychological thriller, The Sixth Sense (1999). If you haven’t already watched this, get it on your Halloween movie night list and don’t look out of your window after.

Silence Of The Lambs

Director Johnathan Demme’s horror classic, Silence of the Lambs (1991) takes second place. This film introduced audiences to the iconic psychotic cannibal serial killer, Hannibal Lecter, who butchers his victims. Delivering all the chills and thrills this film won the “Big Five” at the Oscars in 1992.

Interview With The Vampire

The adaptation of Anne Rice’s famous novel, Interview with the Vampire (1994) steals third position. If you love a violent and bloody movie, this one’s for you, as you withness a vampire tells his tale of turning a plague-ridden child into a vampire.

Misery

Psychological thriller Misery (1990), directed by Rob Reiner, comes in fourth place. Based on Stephen King’s 1987 novel, this adaption is about a famous author who is rescued from a car crash by an obsessed fan and shortly after discovers that he is her prisoner.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Horror romance, Bram Stoker’s Dracula (19920, lands fifth place. Keanu Reeves stars as Dracula. When his wife commits suicide, he swears to avenge her death starts to inflict havoc on foreign land.

Scream

In sixth place is teen slasher Scream (1996), in which masked serial killer Ghostface terrorises a group of high school students in a small town. This horror comedy that pokes fun at classics like Friday the 13th and has becoming a cult 90’s time capsule that never gets old.

The Blair Witch Project

Last but not least in seventh place is found footage classic, The Blair Witch Project (1999). It’s a film about three student filmmakers who hike into Black Hills forest to film a documentary of local legend, Blair Witch. The students disappear and a year later their cameras are found. The recovered footage is what the viewer sees. Perfect viewing for anybody who loves supernatural horror.
