They’re journalists all over the place, editors and chiefs at nationwide publications that people would know if I said them that grew up wearing a mask.

In the new documentary, Housh debunks the widespread belief that Anonymous emerged in 2012-2013 or even 2014. He reveals that the group’s origins date back a decade earlier, to 2006. It was during this time that Housh stumbled upon the online message board 4chan, where the Anonymous legend began to take shape.

The group gained international prominence in 2008 when it launched a coordinated attack on the Church of Scientology. Anonymous members around the globe participated in protests, donning the iconic white and black Guy Fawkes masks that have since become synonymous with the movement.

The very first thing that you could call anonymous was an outright joke between a bunch of people who were having a conversation on a website called 4Chan. For a solid year and a half, it was just about trolling. It was about having fun online at the expense of people who would play along.

Then we went from a couple hundred to 10,000 people, all claiming to be Anonymous members. We are in 42 countries and 143 cities. What we have done is so bombastic and huge that the media has no choice but to cover it. Scientology, one of our first big enemies, spent a lot of money to identify me and put me, my name, my face, and pictures of me out in public and take me to court and file charges.
