On The Table Read, “the best creativity magazine in the UK“, discover an authentic naan bread recipe from Indian restaurant Tindli.

There’s nothing quite like a warm, freshly-baked piece of naan bread. Whether you’re dipping it in your favourite curry or using it as a vehicle for your favourite kebab, naan is a delicious and versatile food. And the best part is, it’s not difficult to make at home! With this recipe, you can have fresh naan on the table in no time.

We recently visited a unique and authentic Indian restaurant in Croydon called Tindli. We were so impressed with their Naan’s we simply had to try and recreate them at home. So without further ado, you will need:

Naan Bread

Ingredients:

-1 cup milk (any kind will do)

-1 tablespoon sugar

-1 teaspoon active dry yeast

-3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting

-2 teaspoons salt

-1/4 cup ghee or melted butter, plus more for brushing

-1/2 cup chopped cilantro (optional)

Instructions:

1. Heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until it is just warm to the touch. Remove from the heat and stir in the sugar and yeast. Set aside for 5 minutes, or until the mixture is foamy.

2. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the ghee or butter and cilantro (if using) and mix until the ingredients are well combined.

3. Add the milk mixture to the bowl and stir until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add additional flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it comes together.

4. Turn out the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.

5. Place the dough in a large bowl, cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and set aside in a warm place to rise for 1 hour.

6. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit/260 degrees Celcius.

7. Cut the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a small oval.

7. Divide the dough into 12-16 pieces and roll each into a ball. Place the balls on a lightly floured surface and cover them with a damp towel or plastic wrap.

8. Let the dough balls rest for 10 minutes.

9. Using a rolling pin, flatten each ball of dough into a thin disc.

10. Brush each disc lightly with ghee or butter.

11. Place the naan breads on a baking sheet and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until they are golden brown and puffed up.

12. Serve warm with your favourite curry or kebab. Enjoy!

The best part about this recipe is that it’s simple and easy to follow. With just a few ingredients, you can have fresh naan bread on the table in no time. We recommend giving this recipe a try – we promise you won’t be disappointed!
