Joel Karsten

Joel Karsten, a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in horticulture science, spent his childhood in southern Minnesota on a crop and dairy farm where he developed his interest in gardening. After purchasing his first home, and discovering that nothing could fill in the garden, he experimented with growing tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in straw bales.

He kept on developing his technique until a correspondent from the local NBC subsidiary did a story and he understood exactly how progressive his strategy was. This inspired him to write his straw bale gardening series of books, including Straw Bale Gardening, Straw Bale Solutions and Straw Bale Gardens Complete.

Karsten also created BaleBuster® conditioner to assist with getting straw parcels for ideal plant development. A keynote speaker, Karsten has made in excess of 2,000 speeches about straw gardening since his first appearance on the lcoal news. He lives in Roseville with his wife, Patty, and their dog, Tucker.
