The Twelfth Commandment

Paul Cranwell’s The Twelfth Commandment is more than just an entertaining thriller; it’s a gripping exposé that pulls readers into the murky world of high-stakes finance and the ethical ambiguities of the super-rich. This absorbing novel, with its fast-paced intensity, will captivate even the most discerning thriller aficionado.

The Twelfth Commandment by Paul Cranwell

Protagonist Peter Steadman, a successful banker leading a seemingly idyllic life, harbors a dangerous secret: a gambling addiction that threatens to unravel his carefully constructed facade. When he becomes entangled in a high-stakes money laundering scheme, Peter faces a devastating choice: succumb to blackmail and risk losing everything, or join forces with a mysterious group seeking to bring down the perpetrators.

This is a story about choices made under extreme pressure, where the lines between right and wrong blur. Cranwell masterfully crafts a suspenseful narrative that explores the dark realities of wealth and power, leaving readers questioning their own moral compass and wondering what choices they would make in Peter’s shoes.

Peter Cranwell

Born in Bristol, Paul Cranwell received his education at Warwick School and the University of Exeter, where he earned a degree in Economics. After qualifying as a chartered accountant and spending five years in the field, he embarked on a successful career in banking, spanning three decades. His roles encompassed various sectors, including merchant and corporate banking, as well as City regulation. He ultimately served as director of commercial banking for a private bank.

In 2013, Cranwell embarked on a new chapter, pursuing a Master’s degree in Creative Writing at Oxford Brookes University. This marked the beginning of his literary journey, with his debut novel, A Material Harvest, leading the way. He has since authored two further novels: The Cold Light of Day (2021) and The Twelfth Commandment (2024). His forthcoming novel, The Scattered Kingdom, is eagerly anticipated.

I was in London when news broke that one of the UK’s largest banks stood accused of laundering money on an unimaginable scale. As I read the jaw dropping report I came to understand how otherwise sensible and professional bankers end up breaking the law. The Twelfth Commandment is the story of how one such individual ended up in every banker’s worst nightmare.
