On The Table Read, the “Best Entertainment Celebrity Magazine in the UK“, founder of Good Talent Media and podcaster, Tony Nicholls, discusses his branding advice podcast, Good Talent.
Written by JJ Barnes
I interviewed broadcast journalist and founder of Good Talent Media, Tony Nicholls, about his life and career, his Good Talent podcast, and the work that goes into producing it.
I am an accomplished broadcast journalist with experience working for many reputable news media outlets for more than ten years, including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Special Broadcasting Service and Network Ten. During my tenure, I covered hundreds of news stories at the local, national and international levels.
Most importantly, it was this background as a reporter, journalist and presenter which led to Good Talent Media being born. I know first hand how a journalist thinks, how they work, what format they look for and what types of news stories journalists love to run with.
As the founder and director of Good Talent Media, I provide up-to-the-minute skills required to be effective in engaging with the media and finding the right angle for stories.
I started podcasting as an opportunity to tell more people about how Australian media works and how organisations can share messages more effectively as part of their journey to industry leadership
The podcast is called Good Talent and it is based on my agency’s name.
Even before I started my business, I have thought extensively about what makes interviewees ‘good talent’, and since 2015 I have been putting forward the best talent to the media to ensure their stories are full of industry-leading insights.
The Good Talent podcast is available on:
I tell listeners how to strengthen, promote and protect their brands in the media.
I give the insider’s scoop on how brands can get their stories in the media.
Currently I am hosting alone, but plan to introduce guests such as leading Australian journalists and members of my team in future editions
The podcast is edited by my team
I chat as I go – it’s an opportunity for me to tell stories from the frontlines, from my time in the media and as a PR practitioner
Not really, but we are experimenting as we go and will change things if we feel we aren’t getting it quite right
The biggest challenge with the podcast is building momentum as a new offering, but I feel it is a further opportunity to help businesses

The podcast is an additional communication channel as part of my business
Podcasting is a chance to revisit my radio broadcasting techniques. It’s exciting to be real and authentic – the informality of podcasts allows freedom compared to the rigid standards of a national broadcast network
Podcasting is a zero pressure situation since everything is prerecorded. Being live is like skydiving with no parachute. There is no pressure and you can hone your skills as you go.
Block away the time, don’t worry about being perfect, back yourself and share your knowledge. Podcasts are the new blogs. It’s educational broadcasting.
So far, so good. We are building foundations and learning about the effort, but the success is for others to judge.
It’s worth the effort because everyone has to become a broadcaster across different channels.
As my mother-in-law said to me recently, there are no rewards for not being out there.
