On The Table Read Magazine, “the best entertainment magazine in the UK“, new single from Southern Californian baroque pop artist Gal Musette, Plateau, is out now.

Plateau

Plateau was written while Gal Musette was stuck in the notoriously chaotic traffic of Los Angeles. Gal confessed that the lyrics started coming out while she was driving as a way of letting out her frustrations about how much time she spends in her car. However, as the song progressed, the driving became a metaphor for how she felt generally—going through the motions, mindlessly traveling through life, without much direction or emotion—and the lyrics kind of revealed a season of numbness and monotony she was stuck in.

“Plateau” is a cinematic indie pop song with a melody of tenderness that is uncommon in today’s music scene. The kaleidoscopic song focuses on a reminiscing melody with contemporary and quirky undertones.

Gal Musette

Grace Freeman is an artist who goes by the name Gal Musette. At the age of 10, she started writing lyrics for piano and guitar and performing at open mics in her hometown of San Clemente, California. Audiences all over Southern California have been captivated by her graceful approach to melody-driven indie folk.

At age 14, propelled by The Magnetic Fields’ triple collection 69 Love Tunes, Lady recorded her own assortment named 70 Love Melodies, which grabbed the eye of the band, and won her an initial opening on a couple of their Midwestern U.S. event dates.

Gal has opened for a number of well-known artists in recent years, including Macy Gray, Suzanne Vega, Todd Snyder, and Donavon Frankenreiter. While her artist name is taken from bal-musette, the accordion-based, waltz-style French instrumental music, Gal’s main inspiration is drawn from artists including Joni Mitchell, Regina Spektor, Björk, Cocteau Twins, Burt Bacharach, Huge Hoodlum and The Fix.

Backwards Lullaby

Backwards Lullaby, Gal’s debut album, was released in October 2021. On it, she sang a vocal duet with Rufus Wainwright, one of her biggest musical influences. The record investigates the aches of irredeemable sentiments and solitary love, what it resembles to move past admired love into the acknowledgment of what is genuine and steady, as well as the repetitive idea of life and love in connections. Gal released an orchestral EP in July 2022 that featured the talented Detroit, Michigan-based multi-instrumentalist Via Mardot and consisted of three reimagined tracks from Backwards Lullaby.

“Je vois le ciel,” Gal’s 2022 single, is sung entirely in French and has lyrics heavily influenced by surrealist French poetry. The track highlights old style propelled piano, tormenting theremin (performed again by Through Mardot), and a lot of harmonies which marvelously entwine with differentiating bass and drums, driving the melody with a predictable section while establishing the capricious high pitch tones.
