On The Table Read, “the best book magazine in the UK“, Iain Stewart released a four-book series about the gruesome realities of the fighter pilots in World War 1, Knights Of The Air.
Knights Of The Air
Nearly 104 years after the armistice that officially ended “the war to end all wars”, Iain Stewart has released Knights Of The Air, a four book series set during the ‘Great War’. Shedding light on the incredible valour of British fighter pilots, as well as the untold suffering endured amongst their ranks, Knights Of The Air explore the gruesome realities of World War I.
Following the adventures of Lance Fitch, a fighter pilot hell-bent on revenge, Knights Of The Air blends Stewarts own aviation background with impeccable research and haunting Arthurian myth to share a birds-eye view of what it really mean to be a pilot during World War I.
Knights Of The Air has won numerous prestigious awards, including the 2022 International Impact Award for Military History, the 2022 Mainstream Media for Military Fiction and the 2022 Literary Titan Award for Military Fiction.
Synopsis Of Knights Of The Air
To survive, Lance Fitch makes the enemy vermin, his friends expendable, and his chivalry more threadbare than a beggar’s cloak.
As the conflagration of World War 1 spreads around the world, it subsumes Lance. As part of his revenge quest, he joins the British Royal Flying Corps. Arthur Wolsey, his commanding officer, begs him to join 100 Wing — elite pilots tasked with wresting control of the air from Manfred Richthofen’s “Flying Circus.” The Germans are cutting such a bloody swathe across the skies that the average survival time of an RFC pilot in the air is a mere seventeen hours. Lance and Arthur struggle to stay alive, never mind preserving their Wing and their friendship. The latter is further stressed by Arthur’s alluring half-sister, Megan. Lance learns fast, but when Richthofen is the teacher, those lessons are bloody…
In Knights of the Air, Book 1: Rage! by Iain Stewart, we experience the terror of mortal combat in the heavens, while flying flimsy, flammable planes without parachutes. Impeccable history from the dawn of military aviation is woven with characters and themes drawn from the Arthurian myths as two enduring legends intertwine, King Arthur meets the Red Baron.
Iain Stewart
“I’ve wanted to write books like these for most of my life, and the act of bringing them into the world has been a wonderful journey unto itself,” said Iain Stewart. “But certainly, to receive awards and such stunningly positive reviews from both professional publications and readers alike has been gratifying. It means I’ve accomplished some of what I set out to do – mainly, to celebrate and amplify the acts of bravery and sacrifice that occurred during the war.
“The books can be gory – as war is – but violence is never glorified. Instead, readers can expect to truly feel what those pilots did, and to be swept into the story of Fitch and his journey toward learning that not everything is black and white – there are so many shades of grey.”
Born and raised in East Africa, Iain Stewart studied at Kenton College in Nairobi, Fettes College in Edinburgh, and Christ’s College, Cambridge.
His feeble qualifications as an author of this tale include a childhood fascination with The Romance of King Arthur, and obtaining his pilot’s license at seventeen. Armed with these, he ventured forth to fly Tiger Moth biplanes and pretended to be Biggles. Who was basically Lancelot in goggles.
However, earning a crust at HSBC for over twenty years delayed this book. Nowadays, he staves off reality by living in Miami. Knights of the Air, book 1; RAGE is his first book and has won multiple awards.
