After graduating from the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in 1951, John Baillie served as a naval aviator. He later transitioned to a career in finance, qualifying as a cost and works accountant in 1967 and subsequently working as a merchant banker. This led him to the oil industry, where he spent twenty-eight years in Aberdeen. He and his wife relocated to Germany in 2002.
