I interviewed Allison Jackson, founder of Allison Jackson Fitness and hot of the Fit To Lead by Allison Jackson podcast about her life and career, and what inspires her work.
I’m the founder of Allison Jackson Fitness, an online fitness and nutrition company that helps high-performing women get lean and healthy without crazy gimmicks or stress so they can lose weight and feel good in their own skin.I’m also a certified nutrition coach, personal trainer, yoga instructor, and pro masters figure competitor.
In addition, I’m also a professional wellness speaker for women’s retreats, trade organizations, and corporate groups. In addition to 1:1 coaching, I’m also the host of the Fit to Lead podcast and author of the book Flab to Fab in 8 Weeks.
I really wanted another platform to share my message about the importance of self-care, health and wellness. I did a ton of research and spoke with other podcasters to understand what’s involved in publishing a podcast. That’s how I ended up on Anchor.fm.
My podcast is called Fit to Lead by Allison Jackson Fitness. Fit to Lead is also what I call my coaching program and it really denotes my goal: to help women prioritize their health so they can be at their best. Many of my clients are executives, coaches and other leaders.
I publish my podcast on Anchor which distributes to Spotify, Apple, Google, Overcast and others.
In addition to solo episodes where I discuss topics like nutrition, exercise, weight loss, and mindset, I bring on guests from a variety of backgrounds. From doctors and professors to authors and entrepreneurs, I interview individuals who are prioritizing their self-care or specialize in a certain area of wellness that would help my listeners.
I host alone.
Anchor makes it super easy to edit the episodes myself. I record via Zoom, upload, edit, and publish.
I have a list of standard questions that I use for my interviews, but nothing is formally scripted. I tell all of my guests that we’re just having a casual conversation.
Since I first started, I’ve begun to get more strategic on who I bring on, what I title the episodes and how long they are. I like to hear what others are doing and see what is trending to get a better understanding of how I can improve my show.
The biggest challenge is making sure I have enough episodes ready to post. I release my podcast every Tuesday. Sometimes I have a month’s worth of content and sometimes I am scrambling to record the night before.
Some of my favorites are those of friends, fellow podcasters and content that specifically interests me. For example, I love Karen Yankovich’s Good Girls Get Rich. Jill Coleman has two really great podcasts: Fit Biz U and The Best Life Podcast.
I always ensure my guests promote the episodes they’re featured in. In addition, I post episodes to my website, my newsletter, social media, and then I make sure to tag my guests.
I don’t earn any money from podcasting. I would love to have that amount of traffic and listeners to monetize it, but for now it’s a labor of love.
I never expected to enjoy it so much, especially editing it myself. I love meeting new people and refining the process. Podcasting is way more fun than I ever thought it would be!
Be consistent, whether that’s weekly, monthly or daily. Make sure you have a clear mission/vision around why you have a podcast. What’s the goal? What are you hoping your listeners take away?
Absolutely! I never expected to have two years’ worth of podcast episodes under my belt. It’s definitely worth the time and effort invested and I’m excited to see how it evolves.
