On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, Walker Zupp’s Fibber sends up Russian literature with power, politics and a good dose of Othello, when poet Dante Fibber is given the role of ‘overseer’ of a large stone head called The Tectum.
Fibber
A bold and unputdownable literary venture, Fibber by Walker Zupp blends biting satire with speculative sci-fi in an homage to Russian literature; and in particular The Foundation Pit by Andrei Platonov.
A modern dystopia with a forgotten past, and future history, Fibber sees citizens take refuge in the wastelands of England, designed by the government to shelter citizens from a Belgian invasion, in a giant stone head from an alleged Belgian tyrant; The Tectum.
Crisis brews when intriguing protagonist, Fibber, a poet-turned-civil-servant, arrives to take charge of the Tectum. Typewriters fall out of the walls, whilst a doomed production of Othello is staged on the top floor, and Fibber struggles for control a group of escapees battle the elements outside, unable to thwart the government’s plans for the Tectum…
Unputdownable as it brims with the satirical exploration of power, politics and the chaos that comes with societal breakdown (think J G Ballard’s 1975’s novel, Hise Rise), Fibber weaves together elements of the absurd and the familiar to create a compelling and thought provoking anti-utopian narrative.
