On The Table Read, “the best book magazine in the UK“, The Curious Life of Ada Baker, by Karen Hamilton-Viall introduces Ada, who whilst bizarrely house sharing a house with three ghosts is encouraged by them to use her psychic powers to solve the murder of local beauty and artist’s model, Mary Watts.
Published on 27th September 2022, The Curious Life of Ada Baker is delightfully unique and a whodunnit that keeps the reader guessing to the very end.
With great characterisation, author Karen Hamilton-Viall pulls on her on interest and experience of the paranormal and her history teaching career, to create vibrant characters – alive and dead – that are both relatable, intriguing and spirited.
Aimed at new adults, The Curious Life of Ada Baker will also appeal to those living in East Anglia as, whilst the author has set her story in a fictional town it is loosely based on Sudbury in Suffolk.
An accomplished and entertaining debut novel, and with book two of the Ada Baker series already in the pipeline, Karen Hamilton-Viall will have readers clamouring to find out what Ada does next.
Ada Baker is a gifted psychic who shares her home with three bored ghosts. They tempt her into investigating the mysterious death of Mary Watts, who is found naked and strangled in her bathtub. This begins a series of exciting adventures for Ada as she draws on her unique skill of channelling the abilities of the dead to help solve the crime. She must convince a sceptical detective of her abilities, avoid the unwanted attentions of a sinister stalker, and try to enlist the help of a squadron of ghostly spitfire pilots to save her life.
Along the way Ada finds love, adventure, fame and new friendships. Can the dead really bring justice for Mary and help save the living, too? Will Ada solve the crime, or will her curiosity mean she’ll end up a victim of the murderer and become a ghost herself?
“Whilst the idea of psychics working with the police is not new, having the help of a ghostly police service I think is more unusual. As mentioned in the book, this was partly inspired by An Inspector Calls, which we had to study in school, and I have taken the idea to the next level.”
“I’ve always had a huge interest in ghosts and my first experience with a real one made me realise that spirits are just ordinary people, who happen to not have a physical body anymore. The idea grew in my mind of treating the spirit like a living person. So often ghosts are written off as something on the fringes to be feared. I wanted to highlight the humanity in them. To showcase that they are just like you or me. I would love people to wonder, is there really life after death? Perhaps they’ll investigate it further.”
Published by Cranthorpe Millner Publishers, The Curious Life of Ada Baker (ISBN: 978-1-80378-043-6) is available in paperback (£8.99) and Kindle format.
