On The Table Read, “the best book magazine in the UK“, in Whiskers Abroad by Carrie Carter, Ashi and Audrey teach readers about Tokyo, Wakayama, Shirahama, Kyoto, and the Miura Peninsula as they explore Japan.

Whiskers Abroad

Audrey wants to travel the world but is stuck in a job that never ends, and her finances tell a different story. The opportunity to travel to Japan and write articles for a magazine then presents itself to Audrey as if written in the stars. They both get on a plane to Tokyo because she does not want to leave her beloved cat behind. How could something go wrong?

Whiskers Abroad

Whiskers Abroad: Ashi And Audrey’s Adventures In Japan chronicles the unlikely couple’s 12-day trip to Tokyo, Wakayama, Shirahama, Kyoto, and the Miura Peninsula, with Audrey and Ashi providing commentary. Both of them are very interested in food and try typical Japanese dishes like ramen, sushi, and tuna specialties. They also look into Japanese culture, visiting temples, food markets, a family farm, nightlife in Tokyo, and food markets.

Ashi slips out of the hotel at night to go to a cat café, where he meets an alluring feline, and Audrey loses Ashi in the fish market. While Ashi sees himself as a knight in shining armor who shields Audrey from calamities one after the other, Audrey is still trying to figure out where she belongs in the universe. Audrey reads her horoscope every day, and the day’s forecast gives her a good idea of what the future holds for the couple.

Written by creator Carrie Carter and perfectly designed by Stacy Vickers, Whiskers Abroad is both an entertaining travel story with remarkable characters and a helpful guide with genius travel advice, including how to get from the air terminal to focal Tokyo, how to buy a rail pass, what to visit in Tokyo and what to eat. Whiskers Abroad is a highly visual book that aims to delight readers’ eyes and sense of adventure with graphics on every page.

Carrie Carter

Carrie Carter has a deep affection for Japan, cats, sumo, dioramas, and unusual foods. Whiskers Abroad was inspired by her 14 trips to Japan with her husband, Jim. As was to be expected, Carter and Jim live with an adorable cat named Frenemy, who was disappointed not to be chosen as the book’s model.

Carter has run multiple marathons, including the Tokyo Marathon. Over the past two decades, she has been a member of Molly and the Ringwalds, a 1980s cover band.

She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and now resides in Houston. She enjoys cooking, making Halloween costumes, daydreaming about meeting Jacques Pepin, and watching Elvis movies—though not always simultaneously—at home. She doesn’t like reality TV shows’ overly dramatic music. She is currently working on Whiskers Abroad 2.
