On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, in Darcy Lane by James T. Graham, 7 year old Elise Rose witnesses a murder and goes on be held in a psychiatric unit and prison before hoping to put her past very much behind her.
Darcy Lane
James T. Graham’s debut novella, Darcy Lane, sees every one of the 40,000 count as he draws readers deeper into the violence and vulnerability that courses through his protagonist Elise Rose’s veins.
Set in the working class north of England, Darcy Lane explores a whole host of societal issues – including domestic abuse, mental health, murder and more. But it is the authenticity and rawness of how Graham shares his narrative that is resonating with readers.
As she sat in her bed reading from a book, seven-year-old Elise Rose was unaware that her childhood would be over by morning, and too young to know that violent hands played cruel tricks or that innocence held little fight against cheap beer and cigarette butts.
After the trauma of childhood, the now twenty-year-old Elise needs escape. The town around her has become stained and the ghost of a loved one will not let her rest. So, when she stumbles across an isolated house, away from town, at the end of Darcy Lane, she believes that she has found the thing that she needs more than any other. Surrounded by green fields and absent of the memories that she would rather forget, the house soon becomes lodged in her imagination. So how far is she willing to go in search of absolution?
Having delivered such a headstrong, visceral and well-developed character with Elise Rose, readers can only wonder as to who, or what, James T. Graham will offer up next.
