I interviewed podcaster and career consultant Joseph Liu about his life and work, what inspired him to start podcasting, and the creative process behind Career Relaunch.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

My name is Joseph Liu. Originally from the US and now based near London, I’m a keynote speaker, career consultant, and host of the Career Relaunch® podcast with listeners in 163 countries. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of reinvention.

As someone who’s navigated three major career changes myself and 10 years of international brand management experiences relaunching brands at companies like Clorox, Gü Puds, and General Mills, my work is now dedicated to helping people relaunch their careers to pursue more meaningful work.

How and why did you start podcasting?

Through my work as a career change consultant, I began to see how much people considering career changes gain a lot of clarity and courage by hearing stories of how other people have reinvented their careers.

Although my work involved providing guidance to clients, I quickly saw that curating and sharing other people’s stories could help people gain the inspiration they needed to make the changes they were pondering in their own careers.

What is your current podcast called, and how did you come up with the name?

Career Relaunch

I picked the name “Career Relaunch” from nearly 300 name ideas I crowdsourced from over 30 creatives around the world using a creative crowdsourcing platform.

The idea of relaunching your career in a new direction just felt right as the podcast’s title. The idea of propelling yourself forward to a new frontier related closely to how many of my clients and audience members describe their career change aspirations, so I wanted there to be some element of flight conveyed by the name because air travel often involves a slow start, a moment when you decide to take off, some turbulence as you ascend, and eventually smoother sailing once you’re headed in the right direction.

What is Career Relaunch about?

Each episode features candid, honest interviews with professionals from all walks of life who have left their old careers behind to do work they find more fulfilling and meaningful. I also share my own personal perspectives and stories in the Mental Fuel® segment of each episode.

Do you host Career Relaunch alone, or have guest hosts/partners?

I host it alone, but almost always interview a featured guest.

Do you edit Career Relaunch or have someone who does it for you?

Although I closely review each episode, I have a producer based in South Africa who edits the episodes, and I found him on Upwork.

Do you script Career Relaunch, or just chat as you go?

I script my all my podcast episodes.

How has Career Relaunch changed or developed since you began?

Although I’ve become a bit more forthcoming with my opinions and perspectives on career change with each passing season of the podcast, the essence of the show has remained relatively unchanged since the show’s inception. Another recent change is that we’ve now woven in some music throughout the interview segment.

What are you biggest challenges with Career Relaunch?

Creating a high quality podcast is very time consuming, and few shortcuts exist. Maintaining the regular cadence of now releasing an episode each month is a bit challenging with everything else I have going on with clients and my business.

What are your favourite podcasts to listen to?

I love shows that feature real stories from real people who share relatable perspectives grounded in the realities of what most of us face each day. I tend to steer clear of shows that feature multibillionaires or guests who only come from one walk of life.

How and where do you promote Career Relaunch?

I don’t invest into any paid advertising, but instead, rely solely on word of mouth. I typically share each episode across my social media channels, website, and newsletter.

Do you earn money from podcasting, or is it a hobby?

I earn a nominal amount of money from my podcast through affiliate sponsors, but I don’t host this show for the money. I host it because I genuinely believe the content itself is helpful to career changers out there.

What’s something you never expected about podcasting? What have you learned that surprised you?

I never knew that podcasting would become one of my main ways of expanding my reach and visibility as a business owner. While I’d always hoped I would gain some global traction, I never imagined my show would have listeners in over 160 countries around the world.

What is the first piece of advice you would give to anyone inspired to start podcasting?

Decide whether the audio format is truly the best medium to convey the message you’re trying to get across, then hone in on a narrow topic with a specific audience in mind.

And, finally, are your proud of what you’re accomplishing with your podcast? Is it worth the effort?

Hosting a podcast is absolutely worth the effort, which I’m reminded of whenever listeners write in to tell me how the show has given them the push they need to pursue a more meaningful career path, which ultimately allows them to live happier lives. I’m most proud of how these stories have literally changed the lives of some people who listen to the show for the better.
