On The Table Read, “The Best Book Reader Magazine in the UK“, horror author Ian Backhouse describes new book, Beneath The Dark.
Set on two small islands off the northwest coast of Britain, Ian Backhouse’s Beneath the Dark finds lone policeman Jon Pearce over his head after a series of unexplained incidents leave various islanders terrorised, and against his better judgement, he is forced to call in Ed Thorn, a renowned paranormal investigator.
Atmospheric and spine-chilling, Ian Backhouse’s Beneath the Dark gets under your skin from page one.
With a storyline and character development (in particular the policeman, Jon Pearce) that a more experienced author would be proud of, basing Beneath the Dark on two islands and the need to keep the insidious force from reaching the mainland, further adds to the novel’s suspense.
Amidst all the supernatural goings-on, the author cleverly weaves in secondary characters and life affirmations to great effect. Already being compared to the great James Herbert, Ian Backhouse’s first-rate British horror story will have fans of the genre eagerly coming back for more.
Jon Pearce is the only police officer on two small islands off of the coast of England; a beautiful and popular tourist spot during the high season, but cold and desolate during the winter months. He finds himself in over his head after a series of unexplained incidents leave various islanders terrorised, and against his better judgement, he is forced to call in Ed Thorn, a renowned paranormal investigator.
Together, Ed and Jon discover that the victims of the paranormal incidents are suffering terrible consequences, specific to their own worst fears, and are being left in circumstances that are excruciating to bear. They must enlist the help of Dr Dina Melnyk, a lecturer in Occult Studies and an old friend of Ed’s: she thinks she might know what it is that plagues and threatens them – and it is worse than they ever could have imagined – but not necessarily how to destroy it.
Can they find who unleashed the evil entity and discover how to stop it before it reaches the mainland?
Ian Backhouse has been writing since he was in his early teens, and at first, it was always as a hobby.
With life taking many different turns over the coming years, he had a career first as a professional drummer and then spent ten years in the Metropolitan Police Service, an experience he often draws on in his fiction.
When he left the service in 2005, he began teaching drums and continued his passion for writing.
Finally, in 2020 the time felt right to take things the next level: he wrote Beneath The Dark, during lockdown, his fourth novel and submitted the book to agents and publishers, the first time he had ever done so. To his amazement, within two weeks, publishers Cranthorpe Millner requested his full manuscript after reacting very favourably to the sample chapters. Two weeks on, and he was signing his first publishing contract with them.
Published by Cranthorpe Millner Publishers, Beneath the Dark is published on 29th March 2022 and is available in paperback (£8.99) and Kindle format on Amazon. It is also available to purchase on the publisher’s website at www.cranthorpemiller.com
