I interviewed author Wes Dyson about what inspires his stories, and the work that went into his new release, Miracles In The Void.

Wes Dyson

Tell me a bit about who you are.

I’m Wes Dyson, a marketer from western MA.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

My early twenties.

When did you take a step to start writing?

I started with poetry when I was very young, maybe 10 or 11. I picked it back up in my twenties and transitioned to long form writing.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

Seven years.

What made you want to write Miracles In The Void?

It was therapeutic. At some point I realized it might also help others so I pressed really hard to bring it to fruition.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Miracles In The Void?

In this case time management was a big factor. But I was juggling a lot when writing this book.

Who or what inspired you when creating your Protagonist?

Me, and every creative kid who wants the world to be a better place.

Who or what inspired you when creating your Antagonist?

Me as well.

Miracles In The Void

What is the inciting incident of Miracles In The Void?

Our protagonists start trapped on a grungy old floating port in the middle of the sea. When their father mysteriously disappears, the kids try to uncover he truth and uncover so much more.

What is the main conflict of Miracles In The Void?

It’s largely a book about self-destruction, it’s effects on ourselves and others around us, and how it’s our choice to create or destroy our own future.

Did you plot Miracles In The Void in advance, or fly by the seat of your pants and write freely?

Both. I like a solid direction but most of the magic is in spontaneity.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Miracles In The Void need?

Both developmental and then proofreading. I needed a lot of help managing such a full world and making sure everything made sense. Then I needed someone to check all my misspellings. I do that a lot.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a story?

The most important thing is tenacity, I think. The most compelling idea and the finest writing mean nothing if you can’t cross the finish line. They have to want it really bad to make it through all the barriers life throws down.

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

I want to continue this series for sure, and I’m also trying my hand at sci-fi. I love world-building in general so I love imagining new worlds.

And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

Of course. I feel like it came out exactly as it was supposed to, warts and all.
