I interviewed Vidya Math about her life and career, the inspiration behind her new book, The Luminosity Of Energy, and her creative writing process.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

My name is Vidya Math. I am an author, a poet and a dancer. I also work in science.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

When I was 7 years’ old.

When did you take a step to start writing?

I wrote poetry as a child, songs when I was a teenager and started writing fiction in early adulthood. Fantasy fiction came a bit later.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

For my first book, I had only intended to write a short story that was about 3 pages long, that should have been written in a day or two, but it turned into a book that took 5 months to complete.

How long did it take you to complete your latest book from the first idea to release?

For ‘The Luminosity of Energy’, I started writing this book around June 2023 and I believe it was completed in July 2023. It is probably the fastest book I’ve written 😊

Focusing on your latest release. What made you want to write The Luminosity Of Energy?

I was inspired by events in life and felt that I should write a fiction book to help people when they are in certain situations like redundancy or facing life, money and relationship challenges. The book has meaningful, life messages in it, but, along with the serious stuff, it has humour to make readers chuckle and make them feel light-hearted even if they are facing tough times. The book is intended for readers to relate to, but also to entertain them.

What were your biggest challenges with writing The Luminosity Of Energy?

There were no challenges with writing this book 😊

Who or what inspired you when creating your Protagonist?

Modern day women in Britain and their lives inspired my Protagonist in this book.

Who or what inspired you when creating your Antagonist?

The Antagonist in this book is mainly a situation – one that many people face increasingly – certainly in Britain.

What is the inciting incident of The Luminosity Of Energy?

The Luminosity Of Energy by Vidya Math

The inciting incident is a coincidence between the main character of the book being invited on a holiday, while coming across a social media notification from an ex-boyfriend who lives in the country she is going on holiday to.

What is the main conflict of The Luminosity Of Energy?

The main conflict in the book relates to job redundancy.

Did you plot The Luminosity Of Energy in advance, or fly by the seat of your pants and write freely?

The latter 😊

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did The Luminosity Of Energy need?

The publishers do offer an editing service, but the book was written well and so the only editing required was e.g. adding a comma here and there – or the removing of 😊

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a story?

I would say go with your heart and the essence of the story your heart wishes to tell. That way, it will touch other people’s hearts. Obviously, if you’re writing a textbook or something, you may wish to take a different approach 😊

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

I have two more books in publication. One is called ‘The Book of Gems’ and is the sequel to my previously published book, ‘The Book of Stamps’. The next book is a racy, fantasy title, called ‘The Ring’. Please follow me on Amazon for updates on the publication of these books 😊 I do also have plans to write more books and hope that I will have the time and opportunity to work on them soon.

And, finally, are you proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

I am proud of my accomplishment because I have lovely family and friends who celebrate each publication. Without their support, I am not sure I would even notice each publication, as writing and publishing each book can involve a lot of stress (not the writing part – although, one needs a lot of energy and concentration for that, too 😊).

Sometimes it doesn’t feel like it’s worth it, but if someone reads the book or buys it and is either excited to read it or really loves the book once they’ve read it, it definitely feels like it’s worth all the effort. It is also very cool to see all the titles come out. I will need a little bookshelf for them soon and feels very cool.
