I interviewed Business & Pivot Coach, empowerment author, and speaker Tatiana Tsoir about her career helping women go after their bold dreams so that they can be their own boss and make money doing what they love. She tells me about what inspires her and the writing of her new book, Dream Bold, Start Smart.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

My name is Tatiana Tsoir and  I am an accountant, a mom, an author and a coach. But most importantly, I am an entrepreneur and I Love what I do.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

Tatiana Tsoir

I came across an ad around 2016 for a webinar to write a book in 30 days. I attended the webinar but the 30 day book with just a mind map sounded too good to be true. I shelved this idea at the time, but in 3 years it came back when I read “Profit First”.

I immediately joined the Profit First Professionals organization and became passionate about the method. It’s a good system that 3 years prior to that really resuscitated one of my clients.

I got so passionate that I reached out to Mike Michalowicz to write a derivative book of Profit First for the fashion industry. Mike and I talked and he invited me to attend his upcoming event “Author Up Live” for aspiring authors. So I did.

As I was sitting at that event, listening to Mike’s crazy ideas on how to promote books I suddenly realized that doing accounting is not the only thing I want to do for the rest of my life. I got a desire to become an author. Not just a one-time book author. I got a desire to be an author as a career. So I joined “Top Three Book” Workshop to learn how to write a book that changes lives. So I set on the journey to write a life-changing book.

When did you take a step to start writing?

In 2019 when I attended Mike’s event for authors, I realized that I couldn’t do it on my own. I needed a guide, a helper in my story. So I joined Anjanette Harper’s workshop to learn the craft of writing a book that changes lives. And my life changed too.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

August 2019 is when I started (end of august) and March 16, 2021 is when I released! I wrote my first draft in 3 months. And still with a hybrid publisher I launched in 1 yr 7 mo

What made you want to write Dream Bold, Start Smart?

As an accountant, in my practice, I stopped working with starting out businesses because they usually someone like me would be out of budget but also they don’t need someone like me right away. But as I was onboarding clients, I couldn’t help but think “I wish they did this better”, “I wish they’d gotten the right advice right away.

So I set to write a book that would do just that. “Dream Bold, Start Smart” is a roadmap to starting a business and works for early stage businesses too. It’s a “bible” to starting a business.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Dream Bold, Start Smart?

I was well equipped in writing it – I took that workshop and I got all the tools I needed as a 1st time author. But a big challenge was time and effort expectations. How much effort it took to makes changes based on editor suggestions, how much time it took to edit the drafts, over and over. And how many times I would have to read the book was a challenge.

What was your research process for Dream Bold, Start Smart?

Luckily, I wrote the book with 15 years worth of client stories and case studies. My next book will have to have new  client stories and case studies! For this first book I used my experience with small businesses to create a guide for those just starting out. I knew that certain techniques and processes worked, and certain didn’t, and so it was easier for me to write this one – I didn’t have to research a lot, because my book collected all the on-the-set research I’ve over the years working with businesses.

How did you plan the structure of Dream Bold, Start Smart?

That was a journey! But an important one for sure. From the workshop I attended, I had a “reader profile” to complete. It talked about how my reader felt and what journey they experienced. Then I set on to create the structure of the chapters, still thinking about the reader. What did they need? What were they struggling with? All of that went into structuring the book into 2 parts: “Dream Bold & Smart” part and “Start Smart” part.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Dream Bold, Start Smart need?

So because I was a part of the workshop, the deal was that if I complete my first draft before the workshop is over, I get the first round of edits from the mighty AJ Harper. And it was powerful. When I submitted an edited draft to my publisher, it was a much better draft and had the flow, the structure and the reader’s journey too! After that I had 2 rounds of developmental edits, copy edit and a proofread.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?

Decide whether you want to write a business card book (a book that brings business to your business) or if you want to write a book that will change lives. In that case you’ll care about the reader’s journey along the way and will write an amazing and inspiring book.

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

Yes! My next book will be a self help book as well. I am planning on inspiring parents to encourage their kids to take entrepreneurship as a career. It’s a craft like anything else, so for kids to learn that it’s an option is critical. That’s my next book.

And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

Absolutely. I wrote my best work, I gave it my soul – I wanted to share the best tools with a dreamer. I don’t know – If I could go back I would still do it, I would still write this book. It was quite a journey – time and money wise- but it was worth it. Now when I talk to prospective clients who aren’t yet at the level I want them, I can say “It’s best for you to start with my book” because I know how transformational my book is. So, it was absolutely worth the effort.
