I interviewed Tarryn Nicole about her life and career, what inspired her to start writing, and the experiences that inspired her to write her new book, Perfectly Imperfect.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

My name is Tarryn Nicole. I am a former celebrity personal trainer, nutritionist and pro athlete. I published my first book this year called Perfectly Imperfect.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

Tarryn Nicole

I would say around 9 years old. I always had a knack for writing and a love for books. I would sit in my room for hours writing stories at my desk and my favorite class was English because we got to write and learn fancy words. I took such pride in that class because I had such an interest in it. I knew one day I would write a real book!

When did you take a step to start writing?

During Covid lock down. I used that time to get my thoughts on paper or my iPhone notes actually lol. That’s where I wrote my book. Lock down allotted for plenty of free time so I took advantage! It was either jump on the Netflix bandwagon or use my time more constructively so I decided to take the initial step to fulfilling one of my dreams.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

My book took me 9 months to write and about 6 months to fully publish it.

What made you want to write Perfectly Imperfect?

I had a story to get off of my chest. It was something I’ve been holding onto for quite sometime and it just seemed like the time. I was entering into a new phase of my life and I wanted to start it with something new. I was not only tell my story, I was ready to help others.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Perfectly Imperfect?

Probably the honesty of the book. I knew it may hurt some people and possibly have them view me differently.

What was your research process for Perfectly Imperfect?

Perfectly Imperfect

My book is based on me so no research was done.

How did you plan the structure of Perfectly Imperfect?

I just went chapter by chapter. For this story, I went back to the beginning and brought my readers up to the present day so I did have a timeline sequence. Sounds easy but it wasn’t. I had so much info and would constantly go back to add more to a chapter I thought I completed lol. I would sometimes get three chapters down and erase them all and start over.

How much editing did Perfectly Imperfect need?

Specifically I’m not sure, but like any book it needed editing. Writers just start writing. We worry about the grammar and punctuation later. When thoughts come to mind, they make it to appear doesn before the thought flies off into the horizon lol. This is why I opted to use my iPhone notes to write. Ideas would come in and I had to add them to my story immediately. Editing brings it all together!

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?

Don’t rush it! Take your time. Too many people rush the process just to get soemthing on paper or gain the title of author that with a piece of work that aren’t entirely satisfied with. Take your time. Don’t go to B until you have mastered A.

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

My second book will help you get the body of your dreams while eating yummy food…

And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

Absolutely! It’s surreal to have the title author for one and it’s even more surreal to know people are buying your book and reading what you said. Every time I shop my local Barnes and Noble bookstore I remind myself that my book is there and it just amazes me every time. My book has not only helped me release my story but I’ve already helped so many people through my story and that is the real accomplishment!
