I interviewed Susan Fisher to find out about her Body Of 9 work, where the concept came from, and the book she wrote about the subject.
Tell me a bit about who you are.
Body of 9 is an innovative, body-based personality assessment system that works through exploring your posture, body type, and how you physically express yourself. This process gives you an experience of your innate self, which we call your Natural Number, and this takes your understanding of who you are to a whole new level.
Numbers tell the truth and each of us has a Natural Number, from 1 to 9, which gives us the key to who we are, how we think, react, act, and interact. The Body of 9 system reveals those innate differences between people and helps us learn to resolve them and brings us closer together.
Once you know your Natural Number (and those of the people around you), you’ll discover how to have more awareness of yourself, your relationships, your life, and how your communications can create deeper and more meaningful connections.
Martin & Susan Fisher are the Co-Founders and Teachers of Body of 9 and are pioneers in the study and research into the 9 Natural Numbers. With over thirty years of combined research and experience with Body of 9, their work has led to many new discoveries and a deeper understanding of the importance, power, and impact of knowing your Natural Number and learning to consciously use this aspect of your body.
Since 2012, Susan and Martin Fisher have been working together to identify over 7500 people from around the world and to build and share the understanding of how the Body of 9 shows up in so many aspects of human experience.
When did you first WANT to write a book?
At some level I have always wanted to write a book, just wasn’t sure I knew enough about anything I felt ready to write my first book.
When did you take a step to start writing?
2015 – when we moved to Bozeman, MT. We had lived in Northern California and life was too busy, too expensive, and too hard to create the space in our life.
How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?
It took me about a year to write and release the first book.
How long did it take you to complete your latest book from the first idea to release?
I started my second book in mid-2019, began writing in earnest in January of 2020, and released the book in October of 2020, so about a year.
Focusing on your latest release. What made you want to write Body Of 9?
I wanted to share all that we had learned in our research about Body of 9 to help people understand themselves and their families, friends, and colleagues better, and to know how to support each other.
What were your biggest challenges with writing Body Of 9?
Body of 9 is about the 9 Natural Numbers, this means there are 9 chapters about each Natural Number. To effectively write about a Natural Number I had to immerse myself in that energy to communicate. Also deciding on the best structure for the Natural Number Specific chapters and making them unique but consistent was challenging.
What was your research process for Body Of 9?
My husband Martin Fisher and I tested our identification system for 9 years through 6000 in-person identifications, consistently interviewing all of our subjects to distill the language most appropriate for each of the Natural Numbers. We tested and refined our descriptions and process, so they developed over time to be accurate and relevant for each Natural Number.
How did you plan the structure of Body Of 9?
First, we wanted to communicate what our system was, the research behind it, and how it is applicable and beneficial. Once the groundwork was laid out we wrote the Natural Number chapters. For those I wrote Natural Number 1 first, then 2 and 3. Then I went over them and made them consistent. With 4,5,6 I repeated the process, and then again for 7,8, and 9. It was an iterative process to get all the information, stories, testimonials, and exercises laid out in a consistent format for all 9.
Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Body Of 9 need?
I worked with two different professional editors and had a test reader of each Natural Number to give specific feedback on each Natural Number chapter. The first editor would take my first draft and edit for content, correctness, and consistency. She also did a final first draft review for grammar and accuracy. After the first draft, I needed to add quite a bit to the introduction section. I worked with a second editor after that point who worked at the nitty-gritty detail level helping me produce a print-ready copy.
What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?
My experience is with non-fiction, research-based content. The first piece of advice is to know your subject, do your research, make your content relevant, and put some fun in it.
Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?
Yes! The next book will be about how the Natural Numbers work in relationships – this one is pretty complicated, as there are many combinations, and more research to conduct.
And, finally, are you proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?
I am very proud of my accomplishment. I just re-edited my first book and produced a second edition. The content was better than I remembered and I was reminded of how helpful it is to readers. Writing the second book was quite rewarding. For each, I wrote down everything I knew up to that point and the first book was a solid 150 pages and the second over 300 – so it means we are continuing to learn and grow!
