I interviewed psychology professor and author Sherianna Boyle about her career, what inspires her, and her new book, Emotional Detox Now.
Tell me a bit about who you are.
I am an author of nine books, adjunct Psychology Professor, founder of Emotional Detox Coaching® and the Cleanse Method® which is the seven step process of an Emotional Detox. I am also a mom of three daughters and I have been married for almost 25 years.
When did you first WANT to write a book?
I have always been interested in writing since my early teens. I love the self-help world and was a big fan of Oprah’s book club back in the day.
When did you take a step to start writing?
After my third daughter was born. She napped a ton and by then I was a seasoned mom so I decided to start writing during her naps.
How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?
The first one took about 18 months after that I was given some assignments with strict deadlines so I learned very quickly how to increase the speed of my writing without sacrificing quality.
How long did it take you to complete your latest book from the first idea to release?
It took about one year to write it and two years to release it due to covid etc.
Focusing on your latest release. What made you want to write Emotional Detox Now?
Well, people kept asking How do I Cleanse (take myself through an Emotional Detox) on my own? So that is why I wrote this book. It includes 135 Cleanse practices. It makes the process super easy to apply. In less than five minutes a day you can process your emotions without all the reactivity. It is like a muscle you have to train yourself to feel your emotions purely as they are without rerunning the stories and narratives attached to them.
What were your biggest challenges with writing Emotional Detox Now?
I think making sure the Cleanses were written in the way where people could feel the energy.
What was your research process for Emotional Detox Now?
Well, since Emotional Detox Now is the third book in the series, the research had been covered in the core Emotional Detox book as well as Emotional Detox for Anxiety. This book really focuses on the practice which was created by me.
How did you plan the structure of Emotional Detox Now?
I wanted it to be the kind of book you could pick up in a jam when you were in a state of reactivity or again as a daily practice. I wanted it to be Cleanses people could relate to things we all experience in life.
For example, there is a Cleanse for Releasing Expectations, Cleanse for Low Self Esteem, Cleanse for Financial stress etc. etc.
Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Emotional Detox Now need?
I always need editorial support. I use the same editor for all my books. She is fabulous. I don’t skimp in that area.
What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?
Just do it! Don’t let the competition sway you. With that said, do it because it is looking to come through you not as a way to impress others. I write because it makes me feel good not because I am trying to look good. Make sense?
Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?
Well, I have one coming out in 2023 on the spiritual laws of the universe. Sounds True Publishing is representing that book. I am so excited!
And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?
Heck yeah! Emotional Detox Now: 135 Self-Guided Practices to Renew Your Mind, Heart & Spirit is my ninth book. I wrote it because people were asking for more so I am happy I was able to deliver that.
