I interviewed author Sheena Yap Chan about her career, what inspires her, and writing her latest book, Asian Women Who Boss Up.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

My name is Sheena Yap Chan and I am a Keynote Speaker, Coach, Author and Podcaster on building self confidence.  I recently co-created a book called Asian Women Who Boss Up

When did you first WANT to write a book?

Sheena Yap Chan, author of Asian Women Who Boss Up

The first time was when I decided to forge my own path.  I thought of writing a book about my story and the experiences I went through

When did you take a step to start writing?

Last summer I decided to take action.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

With the help of another woman who helps people write books for a living, we were able to complete it in less than a year.

What made you want to write Asian Women Who Boss Up?

Growing up in Canada, I had no female Asian role models to look up to and I always felt ashamed of my cultural background.  Also there is still not enough representation of Asian women in books.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Asian Women Who Boss Up?

Finding the right women to be in this book.

What was your research process for Asian Women Who Boss Up?

Interviewing the women co-authors about their experience in growing up as an Asian woman and their story about forging their own path.

How did you plan the structure of Asian Women Who Boss Up?

Each chapter we highlight a woman’s story.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Asian Women Who Boss Up need?

Yes we have a team that does the behind the scenes of the book such as editing, publishing, etc

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?

Don’t be afraid to seek help.  You don’t have to do this alone.

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

We are creating more books under the Women Who Boss Up Series to create more representation for women.

And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

I am definitely proud because there has never been a book to my knowledge that features 16 Asian Women on the front cover of the book and that alone is powerful!
