Author Interview – Samantha Adair – Rough Seas

I interviewed author Samantha Adair about her life and career, what inspired her to start writing her Tom Grant crime thriller book series, and the story of the latest installment, Rough Seas.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

I’m a married Mum of 2 humans and 2 Golden Retrievers! I live on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia and I am a freelance copywriter and editor as well as writing books.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

Ever since I was in primary school. I was always writing little stories and I still remember one I wrote called ‘The Day in the Life of a Telephone’ and it was truly a masterpiece!

When did you take a step to start writing?

Not until I was in my mid to late 30’s. I had this scene pop into my head out of nowhere and thought “this needs to be written down” and that turned into 80,000 words – still unpublished… but maybe one day!

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

For the first book I actually released… probably about 18 months.

How long did it take you to complete your latest book from the first idea to release?

Maybe about 8-12 months. I like to make sure its exactly how I want it to be before anyone else gets to read it!

Focusing on your latest release. What made you want to write Rough Seas?

I wanted to explore my main characters demons a little more (I write a series), so it was important to put him back in the place that haunts him most and watch what happens.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Rough Seas?

Exploring the PTSD and consequences of it. It hits close to home.

Who or what inspired you when creating your Protagonist?

He is a mix of a lot of people I have known and people I have read about. I wanted him to be strong but also have battles and weaknesses within himself. His flaws make him human.

Who or what inspired you when creating your Antagonist?

I have different antagonists with each book – but usually they are inspired by people I have come across in life – only I exaggerate them for the books.

What is the inciting incident of Rough Seas?

In my latest book it’s the death of a woman – who is the wife of a powerful man

What is the main conflict of your book?

Tom’s (my main character) inner demons but also power and those who want it

Did you plot Rough Seas in advance, or fly by the seat of your pants and write freely?

I always us an editor – It’s usually a fairly clean manuscript but I like to make sure fresh eyes see it.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a story?

Write it down!

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

There is A LOT to come in the Tom Grant Series! So stay tuned…

And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

Absolutely! I am proud I wrote not one but four books so far – currently writing the fifth… and that people who have read them enjoy them. That’s the main goal – making something people can enjoy.
