Written by JJ Barnes
I interviewed Nick Berg about his life and career, what inspired him to write Shadows Of Tehran, and his creative writing process.
I’m Nick Berg, the author of “Shadows of Tehran.” I’m a fiction novelist who draws deeply on personal and historical narratives to craft stories that resonate with readers’ experiences and emotions. My work often explores themes of identity, conflict, and redemption, which are prominently featured in “Shadows of Tehran.” This novel particularly reflects a blend of cultural experiences, showing the journey of a young man caught between two worlds—his mother’s Iranian heritage and his father’s American legacy. Through my writing, I aim to provide a window into complex historical moments, personal struggles, and the pursuit of personal integrity.
I first wanted to write a book when I realized that sharing my own experiences through an autobiographical novel could help others understand that pain and suffering are not permanent. I wanted to convey that it’s within our power to decide how we respond to the events that happen to us. By writing “Shadows of Tehran,” I saw an opportunity to reach out to people who might be struggling, offering them a perspective that could provide comfort and motivation. I believed that through the power of storytelling, I could show that every challenge also brings a chance for transformation and growth, reflecting my own journey in a way that resonates universally.
I took the step to start writing about two years ago, after several conversations with friends about my life story. They encouraged me, pointing out that my shared experiences could resonate with many people. Motivated by their support and the belief that my story could help others, I channeled my experiences into an autobiographical novel. This marked the beginning of my journey with “Shadows of Tehran,” where I sought to weave the tapestry of my life into a narrative that could inspire and connect with readers on a deep level.
From the initial idea sparked by those conversations with my friends to the release of “Shadows of Tehran,” it took me about two years to complete the book. This timeline includes everything from outlining the story to delving into the writing process, revising drafts, working with publishers, and finally launching the book. The journey was a deep and reflective process, allowing me to craft each part of the narrative carefully to ensure it authentically represented my experiences and resonated with the intended audience.
Focusing on my latest release, “Shadows of Tehran,” which is the first book in a series, I was driven by a desire to share my personal journey and the complex emotions tied to my dual heritage. This autobiographical novel captures the essence of growing up in a tumultuous environment and the quest for identity amidst cultural and political upheaval. I wanted to write this book to offer insight into the struggles and triumphs that define the human experience, especially for those of us caught between two worlds. The idea that this could be a series came from the realization that my story and the stories of those like me are not confined to a single narrative but are part of a continuing exploration of self and society.
The biggest challenges with writing “Shadows of Tehran” stemmed from the deeply personal nature of the content. First, revisiting painful memories and portraying them authentically required emotional resilience. The autobiographical elements of the novel meant I had to relive some difficult moments, which was both cathartic and challenging.
Second, balancing historical accuracy with personal narrative was crucial, especially given the complex political and cultural contexts of Iran and the U.S. during the periods covered in the book. Ensuring that the story remained engaging while staying true to factual events required meticulous research and thoughtful writing.
Lastly, crafting a story that appeals to readers from different backgrounds, ensuring the themes of identity, conflict, and redemption were universal, posed a creative challenge. It was important to me that the book not only resonated with those who have similar life experiences but also provided insights for those unfamiliar with the intricacies of Iranian-American life.
The protagonist of “Shadows of Tehran,” Ricardo, is inspired largely by my own life experiences as someone of mixed Iranian and American heritage. His character is a composite of my personal journey through cultural and political upheavals. His struggles and triumphs reflect the complex identity issues faced by individuals caught between two worlds.
Additionally, the inspiration for Ricardo also came from the desire to explore themes of resilience and transformation. I wanted to create a character who embodies the idea that while we may not control the circumstances of our birth or the challenges we face, we do have the power to shape our responses and our destinies. Ricardo’s journey from a troubled youth in Tehran to a new life in America mirrors the path of anyone who has had to forge their identity in the face of adversity. His character is a tribute to the strength it takes to overcome and the courage required to change.
The antagonist in “Shadows of Tehran” is inspired by a blend of real-life figures and archetypal villains who embody betrayal, oppression, and the abuse of power. This character, primarily drawn from the harsh realities faced by many under authoritarian regimes, represents the systemic and personal obstacles that Ricardo, the protagonist, has to overcome.
The antagonist also stems from personal experiences during the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War, a period marked by individuals who wielded their power mercilessly, often trampling on the dignity and freedom of others. These stories were frequently shared in hushed tones within my community, reflecting the deep scars left by such figures on the collective memory of those who experienced their rule.
Furthermore, this character symbolizes the internal and external conflicts that drive the narrative forward, challenging Ricardo to navigate his values and loyalties. This antagonist is not just a person but a representation of the larger forces at play in societies torn by conflict and change, making him a critical part of the storytelling in “Shadows of Tehran.”
The inciting incident in “Shadows of Tehran” occurs when Ricardo, still a young boy, witnesses a violent crackdown by the authorities during a protest in Tehran. This traumatic event exposes him to the harsh realities of political strife at a tender age and sets him on a path of personal rebellion and a quest for justice. It marks when his childhood innocence is shattered, and his deeper engagement with the conflicts around him begins, propelling him toward a journey that will eventually lead him to America and into the military.
The main conflict in “Shadows of Tehran” centers around Ricardo’s relentless struggle against various forms of oppression, reflecting his deep-seated discomfort with peace and his nearly unconscious compulsion to fight. Whether it’s clashing with an oppressive regime, confronting his traumatic past, or rejecting the constraints of a quiet, settled life, Ricardo is perpetually at war. To him, peace feels foreign and unwelcome, something elusive that he instinctively pushes away. This ongoing internal battle underscores the theme that the war within oneself can continue long after external conflicts have ceased.
As Ricardo navigates his journey of survival, the narrative probes the persistent, crucial question: Is survival enough?
Since “Shadows of Tehran” is based on my life story, the plotting blended structured planning and spontaneous writing. I knew the significant milestones and pivotal moments of my life that I wanted to include, which provided a rough framework for the narrative. However, each scene’s emotional depth and finer details often came to me as I wrote, allowing me to explore my memories and feelings with a fresh perspective. This approach helped me maintain authenticity while adapting actual events into a compelling narrative, capturing the essence of my experiences in a way that felt both true and artistically satisfying.
Yes, I received substantial support with editing, which was crucial since English is not my first language. “Shadows of Tehran” underwent three rounds of editing to ensure that the language was clear, the narrative flowed smoothly, and the nuances of the emotional and cultural contexts were accurately conveyed. This extensive editing process helped refine the storytelling, enhance the depth of the characters, and correct any linguistic nuances that might have been initially overlooked. The collaborative effort with editors was invaluable in polishing the manuscript to meet the standards expected by English-speaking audiences.
The first piece of writing advice I would give to anyone inspired to write a story is to start writing without worrying about perfection. Get your ideas down on paper or screen as they come to you. This initial phase is about capturing the essence of your story, the emotions, and the raw narrative. Don’t hinder yourself with concerns about grammar, structure, or whether it’s good enough—those aspects can be refined later. The most important step is to begin and keep the momentum going. Writing is a process, and every story evolves with time and dedication.
Certainly! The next book in the series will delve deeper into Ricardo’s story, exploring his challenges and growth as he navigates his new life in America. This second installment will continue to explore themes of identity, redemption, and the complexities of adapting to a new culture while dealing with past traumas.
The third book will be a prequel focused on David, Ricardo’s father. This book will trace David’s early involvement with the CIA, his complex personal relationships, and the geopolitical dynamics that shaped his actions and decisions. By exploring David’s backstory, the prequel will provide crucial insights into the influences and circumstances that impacted his family, especially Ricardo, offering a fuller understanding of the motivations and consequences that ripple through the series.
Absolutely, I am immensely proud of what I’ve accomplished with “Shadows of Tehran.” Writing this book and planning its series has been a deeply personal and fulfilling journey. The effort to tell my story, and that of my father, in a way that resonates with others, has been gratifying. Not only has it allowed me to process and reflect on my own experiences, but it will also connect me with readers who find pieces of their own stories within the pages of my book. The positive impact and the discussions it has sparked so far, even before publication, make all the hard work and dedication undoubtedly worth it. Each step in this journey has strengthened my belief in the power of storytelling to bridge cultures and personal histories.
