Written by JJ Barnes
I interviewed author Molly Jones about her life and career, what inspires her, and the creative writing process that went into her new book, Double-Crossed: An Officer Rayna Gavi Story.
My name is Molly Jones. I currently reside in Central Texas with my family and work for the hospital in this area. I have a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice which has helped me develop and write my stories. I enjoy how stories can change lives, even for just the moments that they are read.
When I was in high school, I used to always joke around with my friends and family that one day I would write a book. I started out writing poems for years until I decided to write my first book. I first really decided I wanted to actually write a book when I thought up the ending to my first book Unraveled. Once I had the ending, I knew I had to write the story.
I took the step to start writing when I would write poems back and forth with my brother who was incarcerated at the time. It was my first true creative writing. He always encouraged me and was excited by my writing. He was my biggest fan.
My first book from idea to release took about 2 years. I finished writing the book in about one year. However, I was never sure about putting it out there and publishing. My family finally encouraged me to publish it after about a year.
My latest book, Double-Crossed: An Officer Rayna Gavi Story took around six months to complete, which is the quickest I have ever completed a book.
I wanted to try a different angle on my writing. The idea for this book came quickly and almost seemed to write itself. It was easy to put in on paper when the ideas seemed to come quickly.
My biggest challenges were truly deciding how I was going to get to the ending that I knew I wanted. I had so many different ideas that I had to pick and choose which would help the story and my characters progress.
I was inspired to show a strong female character that was not afraid to stand up for herself and what she felt was right and just, well still being able to admit to flaws and not being perfect. Everyone has doubts, I don’t feel a character in a book should be any different.
I was inspired to show that the antagonist can sometimes be someone that you think is the good guy, just as in real life. Someone who is trusted, that seems to only want to help. Someone who is that person, until the moment you realize they are the exact opposite.
The inciting incident of this book was when Officer Gavi is given the opportunity to go undercover. This lays the foundation for the rest of the book.
The main conflict is finding out who the real serial killer is well Officer Gavi is also trying to prove herself.
I never plot my books in advance. I always have the idea for the end of a story in my mind. From there, I write freely to get to that ending.
I have some close friends and family that help me edit my books. Each book usually goes through a few rounds of editing.
Do not give up on writing and make sure you are writing for yourself! There are so many people in this world, and they may love or hate your work. But if you write for yourself, you will always be writing for your own joy. That is the best part.
There is going to be more of Officer Gavi for sure! I have a few works in progress (as usual). But her next story already has a few chapters!
I am proud of every one of my books. I feel that every book brings something different and unique. I have never once regretted putting my stories on paper.
