Written by JJ Barnes
I interviewed Kiprono Mutai about his life and career, what inspired him to start writing, and the work that went into his new book, Beyond Borders, A Daring Student Athlete.
I grew up in rural Kenya, where storytelling was woven into everyday life—around fires, in the fields, and on long walks to school. Those early experiences shaped my love for words and the power they hold. Echoes of Memory is a reflection of that journey—blending personal history, culture, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Writing, for me, is a way to preserve voices, honor the past, and inspire the future. I have always wanted to start writing books after high school but never had a chance or resources to get it done.
I took a significant step into writing during deployment. The long nights at sea and the quiet moments between missions gave me time to reflect on my journey—from growing up in rural Kenya to navigating life in general. Writing became my way of capturing those experiences, preserving memories, and making sense of the world around me. Echoes of Memory is a product of that reflection—a tribute to resilience, heritage, and the stories that shape us. After discovering Spines Publishers, who were incredibly helpful and willing to bring the book to life, I knew my stories had found the right home, and the journey from memory to the written page became a reality.
It took me a few years to complete writing about myself because I wasn’t sure how to go about it. The process was filled with uncertainty, but once I connected with Spines Publishers, everything changed.
With their guidance and support, Echoes of Memory was brought to life and published within a month.
It took me about two months to complete writing Beyond Borders: A Daring Student Athlete. Spines Publishers brought it to life with a quick turnaround, making the entire process smooth and seamless. I couldn’t have done it without them.
I wrote Beyond Borders: A Daring Student Athlete to tell my story and inspire readers who dare to chase their dreams, no matter the obstacles. Coming from rural Kenya and navigating the challenges of being an international student-athlete, I wanted to share the resilience, sacrifices, and triumphs that shaped my journey. This book is for anyone who believes in pushing beyond limits, embracing opportunities, and turning struggles into stepping stones.
My biggest challenges with writing were finding the time and getting the story right. Balancing work, life, and writing was no easy task, especially with the demands of my career. I also wanted to ensure that the story truly captured the struggles and triumphs of my journey in a way that would resonate with readers. But with dedication and the right support from Spines, I was able to bring it to life.
My research process for Beyond Borders: A Daring Student Athlete and Echoes of Memory was deeply personal. I revisited my own experiences, reflecting on the challenges and victories of being an international student-athlete, growing up in other parts of the country, and connected them. Beyond personal recollection, I explored records, journals, books, and past events to piece together a story that is both authentic and inspiring.
I planned the structure of Beyond Borders: A Daring Student Athlete and echoes of Memory year by year, mapping out my journey from the beginning to the defining moments of my career. Spines Publishers provided valuable recommendations on the flow of chapters, helping me reorganize them for a more compelling and seamless narrative.
Yes, I received substantial support with editing. Spines Publishers edited the entire book, refining the clarity and ensuring a smooth flow throughout the story. Their comprehensive approach was instrumental in shaping a narrative that resonates with readers.
My first piece of advice is simple—just start writing. Take it chapter by chapter, and don’t overthink it.
Everyone has a story to tell, whether it’s about life experiences, lifestyle, or travel. There’s always someone somewhere in the world who will find it interesting and relatable. The key is to begin, stay consistent, and let your story unfold. I highly recommend Spines for publishing. Their editors are professional, easily accessible, and ensure a smooth process from start to finish.
I have a couple of exciting projects in the works. Forged by the Sea will cover my experiences traveling while in the Navy, capturing the adventures, challenges, and lessons learned along the way. I’m also working on Red Rebellion, a book about Liverpool Football Club, which holds a special place in my heart as a passionate supporter. Both books will share stories of passion, dedication, and the journeys that shape us.
Yes, I’m incredibly proud of my accomplishment. I didn’t go into writing to make a lot of money, but rather to preserve these stories and share them with the world. More than anything, I want my kids to read them when they grow up—to understand my journey, the lessons I’ve learned, and the experiences that shaped me. If my stories can inspire even one person, then all the effort was absolutely worth it.
