On The Table Read, “The Best Book Reader Magazine in the UK“, 17 year old author Kale Sudhoff describes his new children’s book, Danny And Kevin Conquer Camping, and what inspires him.
Written by JJ Barnes
I interviewed author Kale Sudhoff about his life, what inspired him to start writing, and the work that went into his new children’s book, Danny And Kevin Conquer Camping.
My name is Kale Sudhoff, and I am 17 years old. I am a Junior at Celina High School in Celina Ohio. I am on the Track and Golf teams at school, and I like to fish and draw in my spare time. You can call me an author too since this is my second book.
I would say since I was a child. I have always enjoyed children’s books and when I got to be a teenager, I thought it would be neat to write my own. And I did.
When I was around 15 years old, the idea for my book came to me so I started writing and illustrating it. That is when everything took shape. My mom inspired me to take it to the publishers. That motivated me to keep going.
It took me about a year. I did write and create my own illustrations which is not an easy thing to do. That is why it took me a bit longer to release it.
It took me about a year. All illustrations are done by me, and I had to ensure they communicated stories that children can easily relate to.
I wanted to write a mission book because it brings attention to people who are sometimes overlooked. It also teaches kids to be inclusive of others and how to be good friends. I want kids to know that they can’t be limited and can achieve anything they put their minds to. My mission is to remind kids that no matter what adversity they face, they can overcome it if they set their minds to it. And that they should be supportive of others
I want my stories to rhyme so the biggest challenge was to get everything to rhyme and still make sense to the readers.
I didn’t really research anything for this story. This is something I have seen happen and I thought if other children could see it through Danny and Kevin’s characters, it would make more sense to them and trigger them to take action.
This is the second book in the Danny the Duck series, so I wanted to introduce new characters that interact with Danny. I really wanted the story to rhyme so kids would learn the concept of rhyming while making the story memorable.
I didn’t need much editing done with this book. What the editors did was align the pages and text to fit for print. I tried to be really thorough with the book just to ensure I did not miss anything.
Don’t let anything stop you from trying something even if you don’t think you will succeed. I didn’t think that I would be able to get a book published at such a young age, but I decided to try and see what happened. I am so glad that I did because I was able to bring Danny to life for my readers. The best part is that they loved it and are still asking for more. Not only the children, the parents too.
I would like to continue the Danny the Duck series and introduce more characters to my readers. So yes, I am back in the kitchen, and you can only anticipate what story will be next. Hahaha.
I am very proud of these 2 books because I was able to bring Danny to life for my readers. I have met new people at book signings and can’t wait to see what comes next for Danny. It was definitely worth the effort. The best part is, being a mission book, it has impacted many children and when one says they were inspired by it, it assures me that my mission is on the right track.
