On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, author K L Crear shares the inspiration behind her new book, The Reinvention Of Lottie Potts.
I interviewed K L Crear about her life and career, the story of her new women’s fiction novel, The Reinvention Of Lottie Potts, and what inspired her to write it.
My name is K L Crear. I live in the Northeast of England with my husband and our rescue cat Pickle, and I currently spend my days between writing and reading what other people write (when I get a chance). I am a keen supporter of various charities particular cancer (after being diagnosed myself twice) and Epilepsy which my little grandson suffers from.
I’ve always wanted to write a book for as long as I can remember but didn’t actually write my first novel until the grand old age of 49.
After a particularly bad experience in life, I decided I would like to write a memoir about it to hopefully help other people in a similar situation.
Six months.
8 months.
I wanted to write a funny (and little bit naughty) novel focusing on strong female characters. My desire was for this story to be a life affirming read with lots of humor and warmth along the way.
The biggest challenge was making sure I wrote every day and didn’t procrastinate too much, which unfortunately I am very good at.
My antagonist is mostly a work of fiction, there are some elements of people I have known along the way, and hopefully don’t see again too soon.
The main character discovering that her safe predictable life is not as all as it seems, and it is up to her to be the leading lady in her own story.
The main character’s realization that she must “wise up” and take control or continue to be a doormat. The main conflict comes from the fact that people in her life don’t want her reinvention to happen.
A bit of both – I had a rough idea of how I wanted the story to play out but sometimes it had a mind of its own and just happened organically. Often funny scenarios would pop into my head and I just had to include them, it would have been a crying shame not to.
I hired a professional editor. It didn’t need a great deal of editing, but I think overall it helped sharpen it up a bit and make it flow better.
Be confident, you have a story to tell so tell it.
I am writing further books in the series “Teapots & Tequila shots” series.
Yes, I’m extremely proud. I wasn’t sure at first if people would get by risqué northern style humour but it seems to be going down really well.
