Written by JJ Barnes
I interviewed steamy romance novels author Josie Caporetto about her life and career, what inspires her writing, and her new book, The Vampire’s Mate.
Tell me a bit about who you are.
I am an Italian from Down Under, I grew up in Italy and now I live in Australia. English is not my first language, but I find writing in English is more romantic. Most of my stories are set in Italy.
When did you first WANT to write a book?
Since I could remember, my grandfather used to tell me stories about his time in Africa and I always used to write little books to share with my friends.
When did you take a step to start writing?
I was in my 20’s and my dad got me my first computer and he encouraged me to join a writing group which I am still a member. (Melbourne Romance Writing Guild)
How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?
A couple of years, I really didn’t know what I was doing. It was all telling.
How long did it take you to complete your latest book from the first idea to release?
About 6/7 months. It was ready by the date I was given for submission
Focusing on your latest release. What made you want to write The Vampire’s Mate?
Originally was an idea from my writing group the MRWG, we all decided to put a boxset together. The theme was paranormal. From that I thought what is something that is very important to me? Acceptance, interracial couples are mostly my focus and I thought by bringing a human with a vampire together would be the ultimate goal I wanted to achieve by writing this story
What were your biggest challenges with writing The Vampire’s Mate?
The group decided on a paranormal boxset, and I’d never written paranormal before, but I didn’t give up. For months I read the genre as much as possible.
Who or what inspired you when creating your Protagonist?
I love my gladiators and I love writing interracial romance, that’s how Zev was created.
Who or what inspired you when creating your Antagonist?
We all love to hate a super bitch, Segana was the perfect antagonist
What is the inciting incident of The Vampire’s Mate?
The moment Natalia realizes that she has lived many lives in the past with Zev.
What is the main conflict of The Vampire’s Mate?
Keeping Natalia a human and alive, safe from Senega the vampire.
Did you plot The Vampire’s Mate in advance, or fly by the seat of your pants and write freely?
I must admit, I use both techniques. I love to think, even daydream about my story but it happens when I sit. I just write something completely different.
Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did The Vampire’s Mate need?
Oh boy did I ever!!! Let’s not forget English is not my first language so my first draft is top secret. From there I work on a better copy, then I have my editor friend who helps me
What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a story?
Know your market, but also write what you love.
Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?
I am thinking of writing a sequel for this book, the next vampire gladiator. Also, I am working on a women’s fiction. The white ‘Ndrangheta’ (which is a form of mafia). The women in a small Italian village who have to deal with surviving in the 40’s after the war. It’s set in south Italy. First book is with an editor, now trying to finish book 2 and then book 3
And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?
I am very proud because I write the stories I love to read. Was worth the effort.
