I interviewed author John H Staines about his life and career, what inspired him to write it, and the creative work that went into his memoir, Bipolar Adventures.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

John H Staines

I’m John H Staines retired, from an active market research business in which I worked all over the globe doing research for UK and US governments.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

2 years ago during Covid was I was bored like everybody else, I thought my experiences maybe valuable to other sufferers of mental illnesses such is Bipolar.

When did you take a step to start writing?

About 2 years ago I met my secretary, who is a fluent typist and we formed a writing & typing team.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

That was around about two years also.

Focusing on your latest release. What made you want to write Bipolar Adventures?

Whilst my life time memories were still relevant to me within my memory.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Bipolar Adventures?

It was written in between episodes of Bipolar Affective Disorder which even was challenging to my brain when I was well and focussed.

What was your research process for Bipolar Adventures?

Mostly my memory but with also the help of researching of my family tree.

How did you plan the structure of Bipolar Adventures?

It wasn’t planned to any extent, and was formed out of short stories of my experiences.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Bipolar Adventures need?

I got support from editing by the publisher called Austin Macauley who were very helpful with production of the book.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?

Get your facts straight!

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write? And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment?

I’m extremely proud of my accomplishment with the first book and am planning to write at least one more at the moment.
