I interviewed Jeff Tarrant about his life and career, what inspired him to write about being a skeptical scientist and a mystic believer, and the work that went into Becoming Psychic.

Jeff Tarrant

Tell me a bit about who you are.

I am a licensed psychologist and board certified in neurofeedback. My work has primarily focused on combining technology based interventions (audio visual entrainment, biofeedback, vibroacoustics) with meditation to enhance mental health. My research focuses on exploring brainwave changes that occur as a result of contemplative practices, non-ordinary states of consciousness,  and psi-related abilities.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

I had written a previous book, Meditation Interventions to Rewire the Brain, and assumed this would be the last/only book I would ever write. After getting involved with a docu-series project titled, “Signal,” the Director suggested I write a book based on my work examining the brainwave patterns of mediums, energy healers, and psychics. I realized I had already accumulated a lot of material and then things just fell into place, providing me with the confidence and focus to move the project forward.

When did you take a step to start writing?

I had actually started writing material 10 years ago which had been put aside. When I finally decided to write a book based on my research and experience with psi-related abilities, I began by revisiting this material and using that as a starting point.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

When I wrote Meditation Interventions to Rewire the Brain, it was about 2 years from beginning the process until release.

How long did it take you to complete your latest book from the first idea to release?

My second book, Becoming Psychic: Lessons from the Minds of Mediums, Healers, and Psychics, manifested a bit faster. Things just seemed to happen easily. The entire process from beginning until publication was about a year and a half.

Focusing on your latest release. What made you want to write Becoming Psychic?

I wanted to show that it is possible to be a skeptical scientist and a mystic believer. I wanted to explore the possibility that we can understand what is happening in the brains of those with extraordinary psi talents. By understanding how they shift their consciousness, I wanted to discover if it was possible to use this information to help “non-psychics” develop their own abilities. The process of writing the book was really an opportunity for me to explore these ideas for myself and then share that process with others.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Becoming Psychic?

Probably the most challenging aspect of writing this book was presenting research evidence and brain imaging case studies in a way that was interesting and engaging. I attempted to strike a balance with personal explorations and stories of the mediums, healers, and psychics I worked with as a way to tie it all together.

What was your research process for Becoming Psychic?

The research actually began about 11 years ago when I was introduced to a woman that spontaneously began speaking South American tribal languages after a Holotropic Breathwork experience. I was invited to measure her brainwave activity during this process. From there, I was introduced to a wide range of mediums and psychics who were eager to serve as research participants. From there, the process just continued to unfold as I became more involved in the world of psi.

How did you plan the structure of Becoming Psychic?

I really used the stories of the individuals I worked with to guide the structure. In each chapter, I feature one or more mediums, healers, or psychics that demonstrate a particular brainwave pattern of interest. Their stories and brainwave analyses provided a set of breadcrumbs to lead to additional inquiries and experiments. While each chapter generally follows this kind of exploration into the science behind specific psi abilities, the overall flow of the book (the order of chapters) was really guided by my own journey and timeline of these investigations.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Becoming Psychic need?

My publisher (HCI, Inc.) provided two different editors to assist with the flow of the story (line editor) as well as formatting and mechanics (copy editing), and proofreading. Some of the chapters required significant additions/clarifications while others did not. I think my writing improved over the course of writing the book, consequently, the early chapters often needed more work than later chapters.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?

As much as possible try to devote at least 2 hours every day to the book, whether this is direct writing or research.

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

I would like to write a follow up book that continues exploring anomalous experiences with an emphasis on trying to understand a bit more about the role the brain plays in either enhancing or inhibiting extraordinary abilities.

And, finally, are you proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

Absolutely. I was actually kind of surprised by the final product. It has been really gratifying to hear from people that found the information in the book helpful or validating to their own experiences. It was totally worth the effort and I am already thinking about that next book!
