I interviewed author and entrepreneur Jeff Lavin about his new book, Get Awesome, what inspires him, and his creative process.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

Jeff Lavin, author of Get Awesome

Hello, I’m Jeff ” The Shredneck” Lavin,  snowboarder, surfer,  I’m an Adventurepreneur creating more free range humans. Helping people find their true north, charting a navigational direction ( systems ), recruiting and hiring a crew ( processes ).

When did you first WANT to write a book?

I wrote my first book about coming back from back to back ACL surgeries. This one came from an inspiring person in my life challenging me  of what the heck is holding you back?! I went on to share a story of coming back from a few years ago, and it made me realize that maybe these stories could help other people. I’ve  been big into personal development, and high performance coaching. Covid 19 came around and it felt like a good pivot to get my message across to more people.

When did you take a step to start writing?

I started this book on  July 4th of 2020.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

My  first book took the spring and summer of 2007. It was around 6-8 weeks to write. I dictated it and had a friend who could type 120 words a minute wrote it with me.

How long did it take you to complete your latest book from the first idea to release?

It took 2 months to write, then another to edit. There’s quite a bit of other stuff like cover design, feel, back page,  dedication,  and finding the right person to write the forward. Thanks Dr. D!

Focusing on your latest release. What made you want to write Get Awesome?

I wanted to share my story of triumphing  against  adversity multiple times, and help people go above and beyond in their life. Sharing my stories along with the lessons so they could correlate and relate.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Get Awesome?

Sharing some of the stories made me feel and relive some tough moments in my life. There were a couple times I had to pause, and take a break to unplug.

What was your research process for Get Awesome?

We used the data from our program, surviving audiences on social media and email  etc.

Get Awesome by Jeff Lavin

How did you plan the structure of Get Awesome?

The  book  was built  around the coaching program. We cover clarity  and purpose to identifying and releasing limiting beliefs.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Get Awesome need?

I did a bit of the editing then also had our team look it over.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?

Get started yesterday. If you can’t write, use the recording app on your phone and dictate it then have someone transcribe it  or use an app.

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

One hint: AdventurePreuner: How To Become A Free Range Human!  Sent it

And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

It’s always worth the effort. As I always say divorce the results, trust, fall in love with and marry the process. It’s not the journey, it’s the path we take!
