I am delighted to share with you my interview with Gemma Nice, author of Bee Fit, Baby Enhanced Exercise Yoga. I hope her words will inspire you!

Tell me a bit about who you are.

My name is Gemma Nice and I help professional women who are trapped in the unhappy unhealthy and unsatisfying work life cycle which is causing them to feel old before their time unloved by those closest to them and is though their life has no meaning though the power of yoga and wellbeing. I too suffered with my relationship after many years of trying and now we have overcome those factors and have been together for over 20 years. I have suffered trauma through a miscarriage but we got over that and made our relationship stronger.

I am a 38 year old with 2 children. I was born in Brighton and I love outdoor walks and being in nature and I love spending time together as a family. We have backpacked around the world for 7 months in 2006. That was the best trip ever. We as a family love to travel and the children get to see the amazing world. I am into healthy eating but also am partial to chocolate. I love reading romance novels and health magazines. I love my life and everything about it.

Gemma Nice, author of Bee Fit

When did you first WANT to write a book?

As a yoga teacher, I had friends coming to me quite a bit and saying ‘I’ve got a bad back, what can I do to sort it out’ or I want to loose my baby weight, how can I get back to pre pregnancy weight’ etc so I was writing pdfs for them and then a family friend had said I should write a book because I know my clients inside and out and how to help them. So I did.

When did you take a step to start writing?

I gathered all the bits I had originally and then started to put them together. It then all started from then. That was in August 2018.

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

2 years to complete as I was dipping in and out of it quite a bit. I first wrote to Literary agents so I was waiting to hear back from them for quite a while but then just pushed on myself with writing it.

What made you want to write Bee Fit?

I never found time as a new mum to go to the gym, So I wanted to help others as I was always doing squats while feeding the children while they were in their high chair or lunges around the house so I wanted to write something to say you didn’t need to have 1 hour to go to the gym (because parents don’t have that time).

What were your biggest challenges with writing Bee Fit?

My biggest challenge was self doubt. I knew I knew what I was talking about but I was doubting myself as this book would eventually be on sale to the public but then I had a pep talk with myself and I do know my niche and my profession so I did then carry on writing and then it became easy to write.

What was your research process for Bee Fit?

I used a few yoga books that I already had from my teacher training course to make sure I was saying things correctly but then I used how I would say it in the class and how I would say to someone how to do that specific exercise or pose. I also used a few websites for the nutrition part. I am not a qualified nutritionist so I needed help although I do have a huge interest in it so it came easy to write.

How did you plan the structure of Bee Fit?

I put all the poses and exercises that I enjoyed doing and I knew would be the most effective and then put them into the warm up section, standing poses, seated poses etc. I also am interested in nutrition so I needed something in there for that and also a lot of ladies suffer with Diastasis Recti so I needed to research that and put that in. I also thought that having a nutrition plan and also a 4 week exercise plan included would work better to.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Bee Fit need?

Yes but it was a friend who is an english teacher at a private college. Not much editing was needed, it was just a few typos and grammar.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?

Just start writing. Put pen to paper and write. Slowly and surely you add to each page day by day. Have a goal in mind but don’t make it so its unachievable, make little goals until the biggest goal will get achieved. I wrote one exercise per night for the book but then some weeks I wouldn’t do anything for it. Its a huge learning curve but if you are passionate about something enough then you will do it.

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

I do want to write another book which will be based around the same thing but exercising in a play park using the play equipment. So you can go to the park and instead of freezing standing around like parents do at parks, actually keep fit, use the equipment, and work out for free for while the children are playing.

And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

Bee Fit, by Gemma Nice

Yes I am so proud of my achievement and what I did. I can actually say I am a published author. I never told my parents as my dad can be super critical and will change it to a way he likes and not necessarily the way I write but when he read it he was really surprised and he actually made me cry because I was so happy. I was dreading him reading it. He doesn’t mean it in a bad way, he just wanted to push us as children to do our best. Yes it was worth the effort. I love that I have written a book.
