I interviewed author Fritz Wintle about his life and career, what inspired him to start writing, and the story of his new novel, Rogue Flight.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

Just a regular family man with 3 children residing in a quiet backwater of Cornwall. I have been a director in the tourism sector for over 33 years running a coastal holiday park. The park is a Napoleonic coastal fort, which has been a privilege to  preserve, enhance and document for future generations.

When did you first WANT to write a book?

From the age of 14, I remember writing reviews on local community events. It was from that time I wanted to write.

When did you take a step to start writing?

Literally days I had finished my professional persona as a Director

How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?

It was surprisingly quicker than I anticipated. It was less than 3 months.

What made you want to write Rogue Flight?

I have researched specific areas of military history all my life. The idea from the book came from salaciously reading all I could find, comprising both fiction and non fiction, including biographies.

What were your biggest challenges with writing Rogue Flight?

Confidence, and the lack of it.

Who or what inspired you when creating your Protagonist?

That’s a tough one. It would be a combination of my own ancestors, historical figures, fused with multiple fictional characters mostly sourced from my home town of Birmingham.

Who or what inspired you when creating your Antagonist?

This ones easy! People I’ve crossed swords with in the three decades of running and protecting a business.

What is the inciting incident of Rogue Flight?

Hopefully it offers a viable alternative final chapter as to the fate of Manfred von Richthofen

What is the main conflict of Rogue Flight?

This is clearly the men and women unwittingly thrown into the cauldron of war, against a backdrop of establishment mismanagement and incompetency.

Did you plot Rogue Flight in advance, or fly by the seat of your pants and write freely?

I had a few waypoints and plots restricted by real events, which morphed into completely alternate scenarios.

Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did Rogue Flight need?

Very welcome support from Jenna ‘ she who must be obeyed’ from start to finish.

What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a story?

This being my first effort, I’m not really qualified to answer that. I do know there are many credible sources of advice available.

Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?

Part 2 is well underway, with more hazardous missions in store.

And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

Another tough question. I’m proud to have gotten the book to print. The reviews will tell me in the fullness of time if it was a good effort or not.
