On The Table Read, “the best book magazine in the UK“, author Eren Viau talks about the inspiration behind her latest book, The Voyage Of The Demota Novia, and her creative process.
Written by JJ Barnes
I interviewed Eren Viau about her life and career, what inspires her writing, and the creative writing process behind her new book, The Voyage Of The Demota Novia.
Hello, Eren Viau (pronounced Erin View). I am a Queer, DIsabled Author from Rochester New York. I am 27 years old at the movement and I have been writing on and off since I was 17. I write fantasy and soft romance.
According to my mother I was telling stories since I was a little kid, but it wasn’t until I was in middle school when a teacher sent me to a writing workshop that I found a love for writing.
I was maybe 14 when I decided novels was my passion and published my first at 17.
Took my entire senior year of highschool, I used it as my senior project and and part of my resume to get into a creative writing program at a local college.
It took close to 6 years, after the horror story of my first book I quit writing my own work. But the Idea for The Voyage of the Demota Novia was stuck in my head. Eventually I wrote it into a notebook and some friends and my wife convinced me to finish the book and release it.
I wanted to prove to myself that I still could I think. I love the stories I create and so do my friends who got to read pieces even when I had no motivation to publish them. Eventually they talked me into it.
Focusing with ADHD and imposter syndrome all made it incredibly difficult to finish writing.
A random image in my head while listening to a Britney Spears song, all I could think of was the character that turned into Mirida dancing on a table in a bar with an amused Alluca watching. That scene didn’t leave my head for months until I started writing. I actually have that scene stashed away for future use.
The antagonist wasn’t really inspired by anyone or anything in this book, they grew organically as I was writing.
The inciting incident, without giving too much away, is a racist idea between the two races in the world. Racism that stems entirely from jealousy and greed. It leads to our protagonist getting thrown into the sea by someone close to him and being saved by a notorious pirate captain.
The main conflict is actually generational racism, the main character Mirida has to find a way to save those he loves even when it goes against everything he was taught
I write a basic plot then let things work themselves out.
I did need a bit of support editing, I have dyslexia and that can make mistakes really hard to see. I use grammarly and a freelance editor to help.
Your story is a part of you, like any other form of art. Continue to write until it is the story you want it to be and never let anyone tell you it isn’t good enough.
There are quite a few projects in the works, a lot of interconnected stories, and it might not be the last time we see the crew from Demota.
I am incredibly proud of getting back into the writing community and publishing a work after having a traditional publisher taint the experience for me the first time around.
Currently out on Amazon and KU is ‘The Voyage of the Demota Novia’ in paperback, hardcover, and ebook. In November ‘War of Silence’ will be back making it’s return to physical form.
