On The Table Read, “the best book magazine in the UK“, dentist and author Dr Kourosh Maddahi talks about his new book, The Toxic Overload, and whole body health.
Written by JJ Barnes
I interviewed Dr Kourosh Maddahi about his life and career, the inspiration behind his new book, The Toxic Overload, and the work that went into writing it.
I have been a dentist in Beverly Hills for the past 35 years. In addition to treating more than 6,000 patients, I have worked with leading university laboratories to conduct non-biased, groundbreaking studies on the nature of the body’s defense systems and what happens when we introduce supposedly beneficial chemicals to our bodies.
Through the years, I’ve been featured as an expert on CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox News, Extreme Makeover London, The Doctors and Oprah. I also have given lectures all over the United States and been a part of a group that has published dozens of peer-reviewed papers on the subject of oral health.
Prior to writing The Toxic Overload, I published two best-selling books on oral health: Anti-Aging Dentistry and The Hidden Epidemic.
At the start of the COVID pandemic.
Within two weeks after coming up with what I wanted to write about.

I felt there is a disconnect between oral health and whole-body health and, more importantly, with the oral microbiome. Our focus on killing all bacteria including good bacteria with the daily use of antibacterial and antimicrobial products, has led to widespread rises in autoimmune disease and allergies. I wanted to guide readers to a healthier life and a completely new path for lifetime hygiene and whole-body wellness.
To make sure there were enough peer-reviewed scientific studies cited in the book to make it as scientific as possible.
My own background in the field of dentistry, as well as my own research and reading hundreds of different research publications on the connection between oral health and whole-body health.
I started with defining the microbiome and its relationship to the immune system. Then started explaining its effect on different parts of the body. This led to how gum disease effects different parts of the body and the supporting research around that connection. And finally, I came to the solution, which revolves around diet, and laying out plans to promote and protect the microbiome.
Yes. Caroline Dupuy Duggan has helped me with writing and editing of all three books.
Find a white space you feel passionate about and find what has inspired you within that space.
At this point I have not found any new inspirational idea that I feel compelled to write about. However, knowing myself, sooner or later I will dive into new area and once I have completed my research, I will write about it.
Absolutely, first of all I am proud of the research that has gone into each and every book. Secondly, I am glad I have been able to help so many of my patients and others with the information I have provided in my books.
