Written by JJ Barnes
I interviewed author Carina Ghionzoli about her life, what inspired her to start writing, and the creative process that went into her new book, The Clank Of Chains: From Trapped To Freedom.
Tell me a bit about who you are.
Who am I? I can write the usual stuff: mother, healer, counselor, Pollyanna, lover of life, and there is always more.
I was born and lived in South Africa all my life. Until 2016 when I came to the USA on a promise. The promise turned out to be a lie. However, the lie was a blessing, too.
When did you first WANT to write a book?
Since I was a little girl. It’s always been my dream to write books.
When did you take a step to start writing?
I wrote a book about 10 years ago which is still unpublished. Three years ago I began my published book journey after my release from detention.
How long did it take you to complete your first book from the first idea to release?
2 ½ years
What made you want to write The Clank Of Chains?
I wrote the book for my healing and to inspire others in their healing
What were your biggest challenges with writing The Clank Of Chains?
My biggest challenge was my fear of judgment and visibility. Self-doubt played a role too.
What was your research process for The Clank Of Chains?
My research process was my 8.5 month adventure in immigration detention.
How did you plan the structure of The Clank Of Chains?
I don’t know. The book somehow wrote itself.
Did you get support with editing, and how much editing did The Clank Of Chains need?
I had a few beta readers and then edited myself.
What is the first piece of writing advice you would give to anyone inspired to write a book?
Close your eyes and jump right in. Use your self doubt to propel you forward rather than keep you stuck.
Can you give me a hint about any further books you’re planning to write?
Yes, a Breakfear meditation journal,
A novel: when dolphins cry A story of obsession and addiction
A Novel: behind the library
And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?
Yes, Im proud and it was worth the effort
